Story breaking as I have my late breakfast in Malaysia....
From the BBC news site it has been announced that Niki Lauda has passed away, aged just 70
No doubt more info will follow over the coming hours but very sad news after all he's been through health-wise and injury-wise

Just saw it too. I was watching one of his races yesterday and didn’t expect it. He was one of the greats.

I'm not that shocked TBF as since he had his lung transplant last year he wasn't seen or heard from.

Sad, but after being given the last rites in 1976 he's had 43 good years. There were many of his generation that didn't make it out of their 30s.

Sad, but after the amazingly full life he's had, checking out at 70 isn't so bad.

Agree with Bob, he's had an extra 43 years and has certainly lived them to the full.

RIP Niki. 70 years with more crammed in than the vast majority of us will ever achieve regardless of lifespan.

Sad news - one of my teenage heroes for his amazing come back.

Very sad, I missed his talks at GP's and no more. He packed a lot of life into those 43 years though so good for him. It would seem that ultimately, rejection got the best of him.

RIP indeed. I posted this on facebook just now in response to another poet's obituary poem:
He was often blunt, and was pipped by Hunt after his shunt. By Enzo he was crossed - but all was not lost, as he outsmarted Alain Prost.

Just been looking at his Wikipedia page, and crossed over to Hunt's. Had no idea about this:
Less well known is the fact that Hunt did not want his commentaries broadcast in South Africa during the apartheid years but when he could not stop this from happening, he gave his fees to black-led groups working to overthrow apartheid.[54]
