Just found this on Freeview Ch64. This particular round is from Hockenheim, and it's pouring down! Some great car control on show, in quite appalling conditions; they're really earning their money in this race, that's for sure!

Indeed. I haven’t watched a four-wheeled race in a long time that had so much visible driver influence on display. The drivers were slipping and sliding everywhere, even the leaders. Of course, now that DTM cars now have four cylinder turbo’s, the torque and power has risen considerably. At times great drivers can be taken for granted. It was a joy seeing Rast and Witmann sideways on the exit kerbs, treating them so gingerly, because of course much throttle on wet kerbs can be a recipe for disaster.
You would need to stand by a field of V8 DTM cars to understand why it was so special. But, the new turbo cars look more difficult to drive in the dry or wet. Too many series today are power limited, now DTM is grip limited – this can be celebrated.

I saw the second day, that was how W series should have been done for the viewer. Who makes the engines for the DTM? In particular, do Aston make the motor for the DTM team?

The manufacturers build their own engines but you'd have to have a suspicion that Mercedes have had a hand in the AMR one given their links to AM, their greater experience with 4 cylinder turbo engines and the fact that AMR replaced MB in the DTM series.

Indeed, you are correct. HWA helped to build the DTM Vantage. R Motorsport run the car, like they race Vantage GT3 in Blancpain – but they are not constructors. HWA ran Merc’s in DTM for years. It is strange to see a Vantage with an engine that has half the capacity compared to the GT3 version. I thought that Di Resta did a stunning job to qualify third for race one, it evidently isn’t as quick as the Audi or BMW – but the wet can be a great equaliser.
Even though it’s a privateer effort, Andy Palmer was in attendance for both races. It’s a strange one; on the one hand the DTM set-up offers a lot for manufacturers, with the added potential of racing in Super GT's main class in Japan. On the other hand, Aston are not racing against their showroom rivals, and matching the pace of Audi and BMW is going to require more investment.
