Grrrr.
Older BMWs I've owned that have rain sensing wipers have been amazing in their ability to operate at a speed that is perfect.
Sadly, the wipers in my newer 3 series are the most annoying I've used. In normal rain last night they practically refused to wipe for a good 10 miles and then they started working nicely for, ooh at least half a mile, and then as the rain started to ease the sodding things went on to full alert mode and wiped as soon as there was a speck of water on the screen, at one point going to full speed during a spell of extremely light drizzle. It's been like this since I got the car and I do regularly clean the sensor area.
So frustrating and really there's no way round it as cars don't have set intermittent times anymore.

Mine work fine, as did the last couple of BMWs. They’re set to sensitivity 1 which works for 90% of the time, occasionally have to switch it to two. The Boxster wasn’t great, I was always having to adjust the sensitivity, but the Golf is spot on and much improved since I ditched the standard wipers and changed to Bosch.

I've got fairly new Bosch blades on it and last night it was set to the highest sensitivity but when I left it to see how long it took to activate the screen was pretty wet. I'm sure it used to be better than this, maybe at 110k miles the screen is somehow worn and affecting the sensor?

Rain-sensing intermittent wipe: another solution to a problem that did not exist. What was wrong with the system that had a slider etc with 5 or 6 positions to adjust the gap between wipes? I've never driven a car (one of my own or hire car) that had decent rain-sensing intermittent wipers. The Kuga appears to have an option buried in the menus to disable rain-sensing, so I've set that option up, and it looks like the intermittent setting now works on time intervals alone (thank goodness)

I know it can be an issue with voodoo lights and the older on/off high beam assist.

The old intermittent systems frustrated me because the fixed points are rarely right and you also have to keep switching between intermittent and the two speeds.

On the subject of older intermittents I was amused to note some years ago that my mate's phase 2 Alfa 164 had 5 timed settings and when the wipers parked between these times they sat up the screen a little and when they stopped after each wipe did a tiny flick up to get to that position. The wipe had exactly the same characteristics as the 1986 Montego my parents had and I always wondered if they were the same system.

The wipers on my Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow worked in a similar way.

On the subject of wipers, I've just ordered some silicone ones after reading some good reviews. Not cheap at around 20 quid a side and no rears available but looking forward to trying them out. 'Ordinary' wiper blades in Halfrauds are c.£18 each at the moment, so not so bad really!

Euro Car Parts are generally significantly cheaper than Halfords; that's where I have purchased the blades currently on the Captur and Fiesta (and daughter's, formerly mum's, V70)

Haven't bought any fronts yet, but the sizes they offer for driver/passenger sides vary depending whether I look at Halford's own or Bosch - bizarre!

If it's any consolation, the wipers on my 440i can sometimes get over-excited and go into max-attack mode when the amount of rain doesn't merit it. Not common but it does happen.

The V60s were pretty much spot on but the V70 I had was awful and our Verso was crap. The Captur isn't too bad but what frustrates in either the Skoda or the Captur is no manual intermittent setting. The V60 had either variable intermittent or switchable auto and was thus the perfect compromise.
