As some/many may know, VAG offer radar-controlled CC on certain models in their ranges. The Golf is a major one I've been aware of for a good few years, and I seem to recall one of the Seat models was touting it as a safety feature in ads not long ago; this last highlighted that the radar operates all the time and is linked to the braking system. The advert seemed to suggest this was 'on' at town speeds - it isn't!
The Reid fella tried to test it in a Passat (I think it was) on the last series of Top Gear and failed miserably; I can assure him though, that faced against an errant Sainsbury's 'Bag for life' at 85 leptons it works perfectly well!
Headed in to work yesterday, passing some cars so in the outside lane (of two) and I spotted the bag lazily turning over and over some way head on the opposite carriageway, eventually floating gently over the concrete barrier into my lane. Whereupon, the dash lit up with the bright RED alert, loud beeping ensued and the brakes did their level best to leave black lines on the road behind me! They did manage to lock the fronts for a brief moment, and on brand new Uniroyals at that.
I have to say that, despite knowing it was only the bag I too hit the brakes, which may have contributed to the lock-up; somewhat sphincter-twitching stuff all the same. What I really want to know though is; when that event does happen, and the driver doesn't touch the brakes - do the brake lights come on? Can't really think of a (safe) way of testing it .. .. ..
NB: The new boots were tested a little more today, too, following something of a deluge this afternoon on the back of a lengthy dry spell - very impressed, plus they're significantly quieter than the Goodride all-seasons that were on before. A good buy I think, happy bunny here.
