adow Edition 5dr Step Auto
A name so long it doesn't even fit on the thread title. £28935 to you guvnor in glorious Black Sapphire. Actually, not so glorious as it's a bugger to keep clean, or once cleaned, to stop seeing bits the Kosovan lads have missed down the car wash.
My chariot of the last 5 weeks goes back today - a 1-series, sent as a no cost upgrade as there were no 3-series.
Lookswise I don't think it's too bad - certainly from the side and rear, less so from the front. The black and silver 18" Sport wheels set off the car well, even if they, and the M Sport suspension make the ride far too choppy. Inside it uses the familiar BMW dash architecture, the driving position is good, a nice chunky steering wheel and sports seats. Interior quality is not quite as good as a 3 series in the same way that's not quite as good as a 5 series etc. It is small inside, though - with my seat set for my usual driving position a rear seat passenger would struggle to sit behind me and the door apertures are very small, both for front and rear access. It's tempting to think a 3 door would be better and think of it as a 2+2. Otherwise the voice control iDrive and sat nav is good, Harman Kardon stereo sounds good so it has pretty much everything you need.
The 118i is actually a 138hp 1.5 litre, 3 cyclinder engine that spins smoothly and works well with the auto box. It's got decent pull from low down but runs out of puff a bit when you're trying to do quick overtakes on B roads. MPG averaged about 38mpg, which disappointed me slightly as that was a bit less than the 320i I had. Handling is good and you do appreciate the RWD and the balance that provides.
Would I have one? Probably not - it's a bit small and the ride rattles the fillings on our crap roads. £29k seems a bit expensive, although I'm sure you wouldn't actually pay that much. I do think it feels like a well put together quality bit of kit that would run trouble-free for many years.
