Just been watching an episode of the Grand Tour featuring James May in the Porsche 917.
Now I admit to being hitherto largely unaware of what made the 917 special.
But holy mother of God. As May says, looking slightly unnerved, it's the world's fastest canoe.
0-60 in 2.7 seconds and 241mph flat-out. In the early 1970s! In something weighing 800kg.
Interestingly also the brainchild of one Ferdinand Piech, who was responsible for, among much else, the similarly quick (but not similarly light) Bugatti Veyron.
What a car.
Impressive driving by the 78yr old Dickie Attwood too!

Love to have one though.

Having watched Le Mans as a kid over and over again the 917 is deeply imbedded in my soul. I think they are marvellous and scary in equal measure which must make them the greatest race car ever produced.

I'm not a fan of the Pink Pig, it's too curvy and my least favourite 917 that has a roof (the Can-Am open top ones were uglier). The classic 1970 short tail versions are the nicest looking ones for me, especially in the classic Gulf livery. I would happily pay Lego lots of money if they ever release this, as well! hiconsumption.com/2018/08/lego-technic-rc-1970-porsche-917k/

I find it hard to believe that the GT2 would have been quicker, certainly not on non-vintage tyres (though I doubt such things exist). The clips showed the 917 pulling away but then cutting to a shot where it hadn't!
