Discovery 5 - TD6 HSE Lux in Silicon Silver Unsurprisingly, it drives like a Range Rover, very smooth and very quiet. It's also massive and drowning in FG - in fact this is the poster boy for FG. D4 below.

The old one is immeasurably better-looking. The new one looks like someone has planted the glass-house of a much bigger car on the lower body of a smaller one. I particularly dislike the rear 3/4 area. Cack-handed bit of design.

I like it. I've looked at the feasibility of getting one and for what I'd want I don't think I can do it. I don't think I'll feel short changed in a D4, however. Should happen in September.

Is it bigger than the Disco 4? I've only seen a couple on the road but they don't appear as "chunky" as the 4, which still looks fantastic to my eyes.

Before I go off on a rant may I say how tidy your street is and I'm loving your neighbours Targa.
One of the nicer Discos I've seen but I still can't get comfortable with the styling. Given the brand loyalty those that bought the old Discovery will probably just buy this one as well. It just looks so big, the last one was at least utilitarian but this looks like its more at home in Waitrose than a field. I'm not doubting its off road ability as no doubt it'll be amazing but it just doesn't look like its up to the job. They've now become the Zafira for the Wealthy.
Odd to think Gerry McGovern who has done the Range Rover line up has also had an off day on the Disco and Disco Sport.
When can you get your hands on a Velar as I thought that was wonderful when I sat in one?

I like the interior and the front end, but it's completely ruined by the rear end, there's so much wrong with it before you even get to the number plate issue.
That colour does suit it though, it looks a lot better than the orange one I see most days.

The colour is, I grant you, nice. Smokey/bronzey greys generally do it for me. I used to like the Sepang Bronze BMW offered on eg the E60 M5. I'd love a Z4M coupe that colour.

The problem with the Velar at the moment is that LR don't have huge faith in its residuals, that may mean you have some decent equity at the end, but it's a risk and results in a well specced one being more expensive per month than the Sport and close to a full fat proper one.

I spend a short while inside the new Disco and Disco Sport at a dealership in London last week-end whilst killing time. I like the rear-end styling of the new Disco apart from the offset numberplate which just looks wrong. All the LR products now though seem to be absolutely massive, almost needlessly so, other than for boasting how much road space they take up.

Just can't get over the offset number plate. It just looks wrong on so many levels.

Another who's not keen on the looks and especially the rear.
In fact I really dislike the sloping upwards effect of the rear under-bumper area on all the current range.
In the RR/LR articles I've read recently Gerry McGovern comes across as being very arrogant/uncompromising. In my opinion that's not working out too well.

Not my cup of tea by a long chalk. Is that piano black or some random dark shiny wood on the interior?

I think the D4 is lovely. I need to see a D5 in the flesh. I wouldn't have to look at it from the rear so I could probably get over it!

I've seen more than one in the metal here in London (obviously). They look even more top-heavy and peculiar up close and personal.
Go for a D4. Two sets of our more country friends have recently done precisely that because they took one look at the D5 and thought "yuk".

Well I am amazed by the strength of feeling in the nation.
SUVs of any sort are by no means my bag, so I am not labouring under excessive moonboot-ism, but I cannot see what is so divisive about this design.
The front 3/4 and side views are quite attractive - particularly in the CB spec of sharky metallic + silver 21s. I really like the surface contouring down the flanks and the way the arches swell. The rear is the least successful aspect granted, but are we not all going slightly OTT ?. Overall, the new car makes the old one look absolutely ancient (even more so when you drive it).
Anyway - the missus loves it, so job done.
The neighbour's car is a Disco Sport (which for the record, is the least objectionable mid size SUV on sale)

Those are 21-inch wheels!?
How does it then manage to look so under-wheeled!?

I agree with CB on the Disco Sport. I was trying to get my neighbour to actually go and have a look and test drive one. He has a FL2 at the moment and it is getting on a bit in terms of miles. He is adamant that the Sport is miles smaller than his FL2. I actually got him the specs showing it was larger and the appeareance was merely down to the design.
He remains unconvinced. 😩🙄

I'm another who can't stand the styling - back-end in looks pinched in from the wheel arch and the body looks more 'plonked on'.

Those are 21-inch wheels!? How does it then manage to look so under-wheeled!? Because they are absolutely massive vehicles; you really need a step ladder if you are going to clean the roof, for example. I think that the roof line of the Kuga, despite being tall-ish, is still lower than that of my old Galaxy (which according to the the online MoT records is still doing fine.....)

Nice. Now these are everywhere I'm really getting used to them. Silicon Silver is ace. In January I spent a week trundling around Arizona and Utah in this one and came away deeply impressed.

I seem to remember that when the D3 came out there was much wailing and gnashing from the D2 / D2.5 lovers. Too flash, too comfy, not a proper Land Rover and the styling was odd. Now the D3 / D4 is a national institution.
On the D5, that's the first time I've seen a really good side shot and it is a lovely clean design. Like the original D3 was. I'm getting used to the back, but I wish the roof didn't drop away - if it had been kept level it would have aped the D4 much better. Dark colours looks so much better than shouty whites.
I'm sure it drives fantastically.
I agree re the Disco Sport. I read that it is now the best selling LR product - selling faster then the Evoque. If it had a higher tow limit, I'd seriously look at one.

I never liked the D3 and still don't. The D4 was an improvement but I'm still not a massive fan. But it looks heaps better than this.
But then again, I don't really like any of the current Land Rover designs apart from the Discovery Sport. There's just something overly TOWIE about the styling cues that I simply don't find appealing.

I was parked next to a new one with the viper wheels and had a bit of a crisis. I have always liked Essex, though.

What engine is in that Piers ? The V6 diesel. It's the same car you might have seen going round UK sites with a selection of Lego props back in October or so. Incidentally we drove up to Scotland yesterday and I must have seen a dozen of these so far, including on the journey. Pretty impressive for something that's only been going to customers for six weeks or so.

There are lots of customer cars about - all high spec. It's obviously hit the spot, even though it is incredibly expensive (£7k deposit and £1009 a month to Joseph Public for HSE lugzureee) One tries one's best, I set the standard that others follow...

I was passed by one that must have been doing 80-something in the outside lane of the M3 this afternoon..... they're absolutely enormous, almost like a streamlined Transit van going past.... and the offset rear number plate looks worse IMHO when the car (small barn?) is on the move
