Well, the BM has been parked on the drive since Saturday evening and this morning's first application of the brakes resulted in a fairly significant graunching, felt through the pedal as well as the ears. It clearly wasn't just a build up of rust on the disc faces either as it never fully went away. Still, it can't need anything done to the brakes because the OBC reckons there's at least 8k miles left on them What was wrong with the little wire in the pad that cars used to have to give an early warning of brake wear?

The brake life on the OBC is completely useless, I think it’s based on distance rather than the actual life of the pads. They have dropped it from the more recent cars, along with splitting out the filters, it’s back to oil change and major service. Much simpler.

I suspect their original plan to entice customers into the showroom more often actually ended up with the cars coming back at the end of leases with some maintenance having not been carried out.

Well, the car was in getting the brakes looked over and stripped/cleaned up yesterday with the result that it now has new rear pads. I could feel the difference on the way home so I suspect something was binding somewhere.
Turns out the brakes DO still have a wire in them so I will get a warning when the front pads need doen. It'll need discs at that point too.
One nice touch was that the tech doing the work was so taken with the blue calipers (part of the M Sport Plus kit I think) that he gave them a good polish so they're sparkling like new! His colleagues were taking the piss out of him about it.....

You can't beat a good old fashioned rummage around, especially when it comes to something as important as brakes. I was replacing mine last week as the last MOT gave an advisory on the rears. Naturally, I did the whole lot and it was a good job - the front pads, whilst still having bucketloads of material left on them, had worn only on the edges and made a right mess of the discs as well. Replacing them also removed a knock that was only present under braking, so win-win.
