...the biggest issue when the kids get older is the relative lack of rear legroom, starts with little feet kicking the seat back... Do people never discipline their kids ;-) I kicked the back of my dad's front seat once. Never again! My kids didn’t do it intentionally, had strong rules from the start, but it can still happen. Even now they’re not allowed to eat or drink in the car! Well, water is OK....

One of my childhood memories is the indiscriminate hand of doom from the front seat - flailing around at me and my brother to 'pack it in' on the back seat of the Maxi Sure it was my brothers fault......

Ah the Maxi! Did you ever make the mistake of hopping in on a summer's day while wearing shorts?

Ah the Maxi! Did you ever make the mistake of hopping in on a summer's day while wearing shorts? Oh yes, the pain of superheated vinyl on bare flesh. That was an occupational hazard of many a car of that period. When velour seats were a real sign of luxury as they didn't burn your arse on hot days.

Yep. We had a Mini Clubman estate with brown vinyl and many a thigh was burned on those seats. The Monza that followed, with green velour, was a huge step up in luxury and comfort.

From a Mini to a Monza is a HUGE step! Green velour, too. Sooooo luxurious. And very green.

Is vinyl worse than leather for heat-retention? Living in Rome as a child in the early 1980s, my parents had a Volvo 240 estate with black leather seats that were definitely equally capable of giving you third degree burns if the car hadn't been parked in the shade.

I have the lack of space issue with the 3 Series.
If Ed Jr is in his car seat I can't then sit in the seat in front. Its amazing that a car seat and push chair will take up the entire space in the car. The missus wants an SUV of course but I'm resisting. I find small SUV's thoroughly depressing and dare I say pointless therefore it'll be X3 and above but the prices are huge.

An SUV won't necessarily solve the issue, as the boot may be bigger, but not many have additional space in the back to help with the car seat issue. I've had current 3 and X3 hire cars with the kids in the back and the X3 has more space than the 3 series, but no more than a 5 series which would be a better option in many ways. Short seat bases can make rear legroom look better than it is, the current E Class is a good example, I've been in a couple recently pretty much back to back with a current 5 series and they are quite a bit less comfortable (seat and ride)

I could drive the car ok but I'm a short-arse, anyone getting towards 6 foot tall would've had to sit too close to the wheel.
