Ok, it's a 510bhp M version one...
www.pistonheads.com/news/ph-germancars/new-bmw-x3-m-and-x4-m-launch-with-510hp/39618
...but still...that's £25k more than the 355bhp M40i version. An extraordinarily expensive way to apparently only cut your 0-60 time from 4.8 secs to 4.2 secs...an improvement of 12.5%...that's not an especially impressive return from an extra 155 horses.
And the X4 is woefully ugly - that rear 3/4 view - my eyes!

It’s expensive, that’s M Tax for you, but it will be £50k pretty quickly after it’s registered, especially when the M3 is launched (for less money?). It has £6-7k of additional equipment vs the 40i and will be worth more when you sell it, but unless it’s vastly better to drive I agree with your point.
The X4 is a horrible looking thing.

I bet they can't sell them fast enough once available.

I’m not 100% sure on the spec, but just looking at the intro page on the website you’d have to add Merino leather, M Sport Plus pack, driving assistant, comfort pack and sensatec dash (assume the M has leather) which is about £6k iirc and there will be other things you can’t get on the 40i such as the M Sport Exhaust.

£77k for an X3M. £79k for an X4M. Or or £81k you can have the new 6 cylinder RRS HST. Hhmmmm.....let me think about that.

You'll be able to look down on the BMWs. From the back of the recovery lorry.
New RS Q3 out soon. Not looking forward to hearing the price!

The money would be nice but I would put it on another motor.

Hmm, I almost like the look of the X3 M. And the Macan. A relatively compact fast SUV holds appeal, apart from the prices of them! Need to hear either car, hopefully the S58 won't sound as tragic as the S55 did.
Just looking at the M340i, why does it get such a nasty grille, but the X3 40i does not? I'm sure BMW will rectify that with the LCI X3, but its strange. One would expect the SUV to be prioritised for tacky grille.

A relatively compact fast SUV holds appeal Which one are you getting then? I am finding it exceedingly amusing to come up behind someone in a fast car and then keeping up with them when they boot it!

Macan. I'm not surprised people do that you, they see a Q3 with a single tail pipe, they think you won't be a problem. I'm sure a future RS Q3 will have more prominent tail pipes, but yours holds appeal. I suppose the problem with these SUV's like the X3, is when one compares them to regular saloons. M340i v X3 40i, M3 G80 v X3 M, Merc C63 v GLC 63. Its like, the proper car is cheaper, better looking and a lot lighter. Nevertheless, its where the market is, and I don't really care if they exist, because the profits from these can fund more traditional stuff.

Might only have a single tail pipe but it's a pretty big one. It's real, as well, not just a big bumper decoration with a small pipe hidden behind it. Also, if the dodgy Russian video I saw a while ago isn't faked, it'll kick the arse of a Macan Turbo in a drag race. I say dodgy because they appear to do the race on a public road.

All they need do is make them less ugly. And cheaper. Oh, and lower to the ground.

I think a lot of people suddenly decide they want an SUV when they have kids. I've been told by many people that getting babies, car-seats and other baby-related clobber out of a medium-sized SUV is just easier than a low-slung estate - you don't have to bend down as much.
Similar argument with the crinklies, which is why both my parents switched to a small/mid-size SUV last time around (A3 > Countryman, A7 > SQ5), as did my father-in-law (C-Class > Qashqai) and my uncle (A6 Avant to Forester).

And that's their choice, surely? I really don't understand why people get so hung up on how other people choose to spend their money. The 3/4 series range offers something for everyone, it would seem. Buy what you like.

My Dad is in his 70s now, so being a bit easier to get in/out of is more important which is why he went for the 6GT. Not everyone’s idea of a good looking car, but it’s grown on me the more I’ve seen it. He’s dead against getting an SUV.
I get the argument about it being slightly easier moving babies around in an SUV, but the size of the door opening is the most important thing and the biggest issue when the kids get older is the relative lack of rear legroom, starts with little feet kicking the seat back then as they get bigger they won’t fit comfortably. There’s more legroom in the Golf than a Macan or Velour as an example and even moving up a size to the latest Discovery / RR Sport doesn’t solve the problem if the driver is 6ft+. But cars like the 4GC / A7 / CLS are all as bad, with limited rear headroom as well, I can’t sit upright in the back of a 4GC.
But I agree with Michael, buy what you like. Just thinking about forum members, all car enthusiasts but we have a lot of different requirements

We found that by far the easiest access for baby seats was through the rear-hinged extra side door on our old shape Mini Clubman. I expect a RR Phantom would be similar, but not so practical for short runs into town...

The 3/4 series range offers something for everyone, it would seem. Buy what you like. I'm not disagreeing with you. If we had a child, I could imagine having eg an X3 or other vaguely normally-sized SUV. But I don't get the central London trend for full-sized SUVs - they are just unnecessarily big for the traffic conditions and street dimensions in many cases. We have a width restrictor near us and it's tedious sitting there whilst some person with more money than sense or spatial awareness tries to get a full-fat black Range Rover through it. They do fit, but it's a very close-run thing.

I remember the first time my dad drove us home from Cornwall when I was about 5 or 6. I was sitting behind him (almost always sat behind my mum when older) and kicked his seat - inadvertently I might add. I got a resounding slap on the leg and told in no uncertain terms if I did it again, IK was walking home - all 500 miles of it! Never happened again, funnily enough!
