Not so much the small ads as direct emails. BMW are currently selling the M140i Shadow edition 5 door Auto for more than £8,000 off list and 3.9%apr. That is an awful lot of performance for £28K and something of a bargain.

Similar to when I looked at one back in May, I could have had £8,500 off one with a couple of options, but I think list was around the £38k mark, as I couldn't have everything I wanted and keep it under £40k. Makes it good value on PCP as the residuals are (or at least were) pretty good as well.

I was thinking recently, how many 130i's or R32's did you used to see when they were in production? Now, how many M140i's and Golf R's do you see? Low-rate PCP's and cheap leases have evidently fuelled the growth, as with other premium motors. Not that its a bad thing, its good to see so many fast cars on the roads.

Very interesting, so how much is that on a PCP? Looks like £398 deposit and £398 per month for 48 months at 4.8%.

I’ve received another email offer today, £10,000 deposit contribution on the Shadow Edition. That's enormous. Although an automatic M140i Shadow Line 5dr is very nearly a £40k car before options these days.
It was around £30k when I ordered my M135i in 2012.

Just googled the price and BMW have price lists archived, the 5 door M135i Auto was £32,685 vs £37,800 for the current model. The shadow edition has sat nav (£1,550) plus just over £1,000 of other things that were optional (cruise control, HK speakers etc), so that takes the M135i to £35,235 (£2,565 less) That must make the M140i cheaper to buy than the M135i was 7 years ago!

I did not realise that BMW had quietly dropped the manual version of the M140i - seems you can only buy an auto version - I was assuming you needed to add the £1,600 for an auto box to the base price.
Are you sure those are the 2012 launch prices? I've now looked up my invoice from 2012 and mine, excluding options and pre-discount, was £30,525 OTR. Was it really £2,160 for an automatic transmission back then? I then added £5,510's worth of options but swung a £3k discount, so the whole thing came out at £33,087 OTR.
You don't seem to be able to configure an M140i any more on the BMW website, but from the pricelist it looks like to spec-match my car would still require you to add £4,000 to an M140i Shadow-Line (it seems not to have pro nav as standard), bringing it out at £41,800, so yes, with a £10k discount it would be cheaper.

The 2012 price list didn’t have the M140i, so had to go with Jan 2013. You’re right, the auto box was a £1,600 option.
An interesting comparison.

When I was in the dealers yesterday they said that there is a bit of a buzz about M140i's and they expect prices to firm up significantly when the new 1 series comes out with a 4 cylinder engine only.

I did find a black one with electric red leather seats though....

That's still a lot to pay for a car that's a Griffin badge short of looking like an Astra.
Additionally I assume that at that price it is an option-free oasis of limited tech, one of the apparent attractions of the A Class in optioned-up magazine spec form?

I'd have thought it was option free, I've no idea what comes as standards but it's got an auto and all wheel drive. I like the way it looks and on those grounds I'd be more than swayed over from the ageing BMW.

I've just had a look at the Mercedes Benz website and it's the biggest bastard of them all. Load up the car and pretty much every option has a cost of £0 until you click it and realise you can only select it if you add a few thousand pounds worth of option packs.

I think that at least one of the mags made the point that the fancy screens that make the interior look so good in the A Class is an optional extra as part of a £3k+ pack. I doubt you'll get all that stuff within a £31k budget

If choosing again now, just over 12 months closer to it being discontinued and the A35 now available, I’d still choose the Golf R.

Proof positive that taste is subjective...
I think the interior of the new A-Class is hideous! It’s those new screens combined with the wavy lower part and round vents. It’s just ugly and completely mismatched to my eyes. Same goes for the current E-Class and S-Class which are both nice-looking from outside (provided you get a version without the toothy AMG grille) but horrid inside.

I'm not a fan of Merc's current interiors, just that the mags think its great with the fancy screens fitted.
The big double displays on the E Class still remind me of a Rover SD1.

I didn’t realise it was that far ahead of its time. It was a big, executive car with a hatchback/sloping rear roof in the 'coupe' style. It took Merc, Audi and BMW at least 30 years to catch up. Obviously when I refer to the displays reminding me of the SD1 its just the shape of the dash, not the content.

My dad was in a similar position; he opted for a Mk. IV Cortina Ghia in the end - not what I wanted at all!

My dad had a 3500SE for an hour and a half, until an Astra wrote it off just outside Wooler, on the way back from picking it up from Edinburgh. He did say it was quite an enjoyable hour and half up until that point. It was replaced by a Ford Granada 2.8 Ghia X.
