Whereas F1 is occasionally thrilling, WRC thrills all the time. Yes, they are racing in tarted up superminis. Get past that, and you’re watching something very special. I loved watching the Thursday night stages; captivating because it was at night. But moreover, the judgement and confidence of the drivers in such changeable conditions was brilliant.
Over in America, the Daytona 24 Hours is on. I’ve watched Fernando Alonso in a Cadillac prototype overtake for second, then overtake for the lead. It’s fantastic to see him racing in a competitive series, wheel-to-wheel that allows him to show what he can do. A real racer. If I were Alonso, I would sign up to the whole IMSA season. This is the kind of racing he’ll experience at Sebring, Road Atlanta, Watkins Glen etc. Better than racing against no competition in WEC, or midfield in F1.
