New car time again. RR Sport - SDV8 Autobiography - The colour is Byron blue with a black roof - strange name but a jolly nice colour. I wanted a V8 diesel so I can complete the V8 holy trinity (nat asp, supercharged, turbo charged). These will shortly be going to way of the Dodo, so it's a case of having one whilst one still can. It's only + 34ps and + 40nm over the V6 diesel, but as it's a) A v8 and b) Mine It is, of course, far superior to the puny 6 pot

Yes, that’s lovely. I really liked the RRS I tried at LR Experience a while ago.

Nice. It's such a massive leap forward over the old RR Sport.

That's very nice. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the an Autobiography Dynamic? I have to confess when looking up Range Rover Sports following my loan of one I concluded the V6 made sense but I haven't tried a V8. I think I prefer black to that colour as it hides the fussy vent on the side and they seem better for matching the rear bumper and bodywork colour.

I like that, including the colour and Autobiography trim is the only one to have.
As it’s yours, assume it’s an XF rather than Velour replacement?

Tres nice is that. Great colour and wheel combo.

Autobiography Dynamic is it's full name - but as you can't have an AB without it also being dynamic, I feel permitted to shorten.
All black RRS's look a bit like Darth Vader's helmet and in the Warwick triangle, an unscientifically estimated 92.76% of owners have black ones with silly black wheels. Silver hoopage and light metallics are the way forward.
Silicon silver doesn't really work on the RRS, whereas Byron blue and Indus silver look especially good in my opinion. Corris is a solid 3rd option and I would be all over an Aruba one give the chance (Aruba = light metallic gold).
This replaces my XF Sportbrake.

Not a great sign for the J part of the organisation that you’ve gone for double LRs. Unfortunately I’d have to do the same in your position.
Agree on the top 3 colours, I’d have chosen Indus Silver with silver wheels whether it’s was the Sport or FF. bit dull I know, but I’m curious about the real world range/economy of the V8 diesel, be interested to know how you get on.

Very nice. Mine would be in dark blue or dark green. Definitely not black.

RR and RRS are great vehicles that I like a lot. However I think your kind of "ownership" is by far the best - get it new, keep it a year or two and then give it back.

Jag choice is very restricted
No XJ available, so my choices are:
XF Sportbrake F-Pace/E-pace F-type 2.0

Will the F-Pace SVR be on the list at some point? I'd love one

That is a nice colour. And nice wheels. Much better than the black one we discussed the other day. Personally not one for coal-hole interiors but that's just taste - the interior design on LR products is very good.
I must be getting old. When I was younger I used to dislike what I termed "washed-out" blues and lighter greens, and beige-y colours, whereas now I am starting to rather like them.

Great car, great colour. And silver wheels - yay!
I think the RRS is the best car LR make.
It just needs to lose the privacy glass for me, but as we know from previous debate on that subject, I'm now no longer sure which majority / minority I'm in on that!

Very nice. Very nice indeed. Does the V8 diesel have a nice V8-y sound lurking beneath the surface?

I'd chuck my hat in the ring too - but with any luck, it won't be available because they are massively sold out - same for the Velar SVR.
Yep, even fresh out of the wrapper, it has V8 " character " (rumbles like a distant waterfall and clearly different to the V6) - it should get better as it beds in.

I’d have a Velar SVR over the F Pace anyday of the week. The Jaguar interior is bad enough at the price they charge now let alone the cost they will be pitching that.

A friend is looking at replacing her 5 year old Q7 with either a 6 month old Velar or a 2 year old RR Sport. She has 2 kids so I wouldn’t touch a Velar, but is there any advice I should pass on in terms of spec / pricing etc?

RRS isn’t much bigger than a Velar
If an older RRS is the choice, ensure you buy it from an LR retailer under the APO scheme.
Amongst other benefits, the 2 year unlimited mileage warranty is very useful to have

That doesn’t sound like a massive vote of confidence in the reliability of your own product!

How so ?
A 2 year old RRS will only have 1 year warranty remaining, but if you buy an Approved Pre Owned car you get 2 years of extremely comprehensive cover included.
Are you suggesting that only JLR products have problems after 3 years ? Why buy an unapproved car with 1 year warranty when you can have an approved car with 2 ?
Infact, it’s actually a reasonable vote of confidence in the products that APO cars can be up to 5 years old and 100k miles, but they still come with a 2 year unlimited mile warranty.

I chatted to a guy in the petrol station a while back who had an old version of the current XJ (his 10th Jag or something like that). He agreed that it now wasn't the most reliable car and he was getting quite a few niggles (although he put a lot of that down to the infamous crap service from Taggarts) but he saw nothing else on the market that he wanted and he felt that those niggles were worth it for the joy he got driving it.

4 weeks in
The biggest surprise and delight (get me and my marketing wonk) feature for me is the v8 diesel, it really is the absolute jubblies. It makes unexpectedly dirty V8 love noises when given the hoof and woofles in a syrupy fashion when on a waft. As a consequence, it is much nicer than the V6 and as an added bonus, it's barely any less economical on longer runs (a genuine 30mpg at motorway speeds which I think is impressive given the age of the technology and the size of the car it has to push).
I am also very taken with the rolling refinement and general levels of comfort. Mid size Jags are generally noisier than their steel bodied predecessors and the sports tank really rams it home. Peace and quiet are very much underrated.
Having said that, I really do miss the way the S model XFs would scythe their way down fast A roads and even with the honey monster V8, sporty tank wouldn't see which way an XF S went in a straight line. Having said that, I have noticed that in a couple of my " reference " corners, entry speeds haven't changed much at all. I suspect it's partly due to the extra visibility and partly due to the fact that because it's feels so huge from behind the wheel, it dulls the sensation of speed. If you try and gauge how fast you are going from the rate at which the scenery whizzes past, I am always 20+ mph behind reality (officer).
Finally - after 7 years of gear selection via the upturned Mr Kipling pie container, I really like the trigger/handle gear selector. A piping hot heated steering wheel is also a bonus.

Sounds nice. A friend has a TDV8 version of the original RR Sport and I have always noticed that it sounds much more like "a proper Range Rover" that I would have ever expected any diesel to do.

Good to hear how much you are enjoying it. Seems a real shame that the 4.4 V8 diesel is only offered on the top spec model - "from £92k". Fuck me, that's serious wedge. From there it's only a short step to the SVR price wise.

Never mind the SVR - you can have the 525ps 5.0 petrol in AB Dynamic trim and it's £470 less than the SDV8.

So - I like the V8D so much, I got another one as a replacement for the Velar. This one is a 20MY SDV8 Autobiography in Silicon silver with a body colour roof and the same all black interior as the blue one. 7k miles now in the blue one and I am very fond of it (more so than I was expecting) and it's lovely, woofly V8 diesel.
