I read through this BBC article yesterday and was interested in the various graphs showing diesel car sales but, in particular, the one further down the page showing sales of used diesels.

If you were in the market for a 3 year old 3 series, say, with a 2 litre engine then you're pretty much going to have to be looking at a diesel. I really can't see that changing very quickly unless the price of diesel jumps up hugely at which point a lot of people who have to use a car to get around are going to start to struggle.
Of course, we could always hope that public transport will improve to take account of that for those of us out in the country but I won't be holding my breath.

My car dealer clients are finding no resistance to buying used diesels and tell me prices have risen the last few months. People who buy cars at up to c£30K are interested in economy with performance. The cars they can't shift are the small engined petrols in medium sized cars.

The cars they can't shift are the small engined petrols in medium sized cars. No surprise there. No one would order one if it wasn’t for lower first year tax and the company car market so the rationale for buying them new is lost when buying used. The overall ownership proposition of a 1.5 turbo 3-er pales into comparison to a larger engined version of the same car yet the costs of ownership are very similar.

I have no regrets in buying a 3 year old VAG diesel. It's doing exactly what I wanted it to do -great economy and cheap road tax.
No decent soundtrack, but hey.

There was a report from Germany yesterday that their new car diesel sales have now increased again. I posted something recently about that. My used car dealers say diesel sales are strong and the weedy small engined petrols are really hard to shift. Big petrol engined stuff still moves in small numbers but it has a much better informed and picky customer base so quality is what counts. Most low emission zones are using Euro 6 as their cut off for diesels so newish stuff is all OK

Yup, eventually the message will get through to buyers and presumably there'll be upward pressure on used prices of the diesels as well. I hope so anyway - I don't want to keep the Micra for too long
