I can agree they are naff in the wrong spec. But to me they're very cool in the right spec. It is just shame that some people have no taste and specify some awful specs (like white with black roof and black wheels that seems stupidly popular - whoever made that colour combo popular needs boiling). White is nasty but personally it's black Range Rovers (and the ilk) that I don't get.
Do people actively want to look like the bad guys from a recent Bond film?
Obviously Range Rovers have always been expensive cars for rich people, but what once looked patrician now looks arriviste. They just have flashy ostentatious designs. No amount of dark green paint or silver wheels can disguise that.
I’m not sure people go out to buy a black Range Rover, there are instead two decisions. They first decide which car they want and then the colour they like. How many black cars have you had?

I don't mind the RR and am another privacy glass fan.
All my searches for a replacement 3 series have been for a black one with the pimp glass.........

I have a 68 plate black one with the pimp glass and red leather that'll be up for sale in a couple of months or so... It is petrol though. 9k, one careful driver..

Does it have the correct number of cylinders or is it a 4 pot?

Yes, because there's nothing worse than "new money". People should know their place in society. Nothing wrong with new money. But rightly or wrongly I was taught by my parents that overly flashy ostentatious displays of wealth are just generally wrong on the basis that you shouldn't rub your good fortune in other people's faces. It is undoubtedly a prejudice I have as a result.

I’m not sure people go out to buy a black Range Rover, there are instead two decisions. They first decide which car they want and then the colour they like. How many black cars have you had? A fifth of the cars I've owned in my life have been black. I have nothing against it as a car colour, apart from the difficulty of keeping it clean (which of course makes it an odd choice of colour for a supposedly offroad vehicle).
Perhaps I just have black Range Rover fatigue because every second car in my central London neighbourhood is a late-model Land Rover product and 85% of them are black, so it can feel like Henry Ford is in charge of the LR paintshop.

Oh I agree entirely, we were the same. It does make me laugh, however, when people who drive RRs bought with inherited money, complain about those who buy them after they've worked their bollocks off, built a business, employed people, and want to enjoy the fruits of their labours.

Fuck that, if I worked for it and I like it, I'll buy it. Worrying about being seen as wealthy seems daft. Some people will call you a flash get if you drive an old Merc whilst others don't give a hoot.
Some folk can afford boats whilst others don't have a roof over their heads. I'm not going to kick off at Mr Boaty for being flash.

A few years back one of my mates had a black Range Rover with black windows and he is a nightclub owner (and ex-bouncer). He replaced it with a black 911 Turbo followed by a black RS6 (the V10 one), a white Q7 another black RS6 (V8) and a blue RS6. Now he's got a silver Disco 5.

Did he buy it at night and thought it was black? A friend had a loaner silver Disco 5 (with black wheels and privacy glass). It did not do it any favours. The conclusion of which is that current car shapes are incredibly colour sensitive.

I’m pretty much with Ed on this, I’ll spend my money on what I want and I don’t care what people think either way, or what they do with their money.
The only slight caveat to that is I’m a little bit conscious of what I turn up to at one of my sites. The BMW is fine as to most people it’s just another BMW company car like the site manager has, another benefit of taking the badges off. Lindsay’s boss recently bought a new car and her colleagues thought he’d won the lottery / been getting brown envelopes etc, because he’s got a Maserati. It’s a 12 month old Ghibli diesel, nice enough but probably cost about £35k.

I think he realised he'd been every box on the sterotype list! His Disco is the same spec as you mention plus it has a black strip across where the number plate is and I think it looks better than some alternatives - I saw a couple in a car park a while back one was gunmetal with silver wheels which was reasonable (for a Disco 5) and the other was copper with black wheels and was atrocious.
No matter what scheme they're in I haven't seen one that makes me see past the overall design and I couldn't live with one.
