In a strange twist of fortune, I find myself with the same insurance company for the third year running, which hasn't happened since the late 90s. Every year, Hastings send me a renewal which is always a good 40% higher than the year before, and every time I find a better quote with the Meerkats, which they then happily beat without any fuss. Why do they not just quote me that in the first place? I'm a 40 year old man with full NCD (The above accident wasn't on my insurance but is still logged), live in a A rated postcode and drive a 17 year old car. There's no chance I'm paying over £400 for insurance.
It did make me chuckle when the guy on the other end of the phone was trying to offer me all the perks like breakdown assistance and European cover, and I simply told him that I only have insurance as it is a legal requirement and as such want to pay as little for it as possible.

Oh well indeed. I've been insured with Admiral since 2015. Same story as you when it comes to renewals.

I've been with Admiral for quite a lot of years apart from the first renewal after I got the 370 when the premium jumped up massively and I went to Aviva. Returned to Admiral the following year though.

As I'm approaching the end of the two year LR warranty I'm now having to extend it. There's a cheaper option with a limit of £3k and a more expensive unlimited option. I asked my friendly Land Rover specialist which to go for and he mentioned he'd just replaced an engine at the cost of £19k which answers the question.

And how much does that sting you for, out of curiosity?

The basic version is £737 (£887 with assistance) or £922 (1072 with assistance) for the unlimited. It's not ideal on top of the insurance and road tax but I knew it was coming.

I think it’s £1180 for mine with LR assistance, it’s already budgeted! Its a lot cheaper than it was going to be for the 750.

Is that one year or two? It was about £500 unlimited for a year on the 440i, which has already paid for itself. I'll need to renew again in December when the car reaches its fourth birthday.

I’ve just looked back and the 750 was going to cost £2,300 with a zero excess and BMW assistance, more than double the RR. That was sub 60k miles as well, it gets a lot more expensive above that.

Crikey. You can tell that the manufacturers know which models have the most bork potential....

They price according to what they think they can get away with. A 4GC is a £30k car new, so you wouldn’t expect them to charge the same as a 7 series. It’s the same with LR, mine will be £100 more than a Sport with the same engine, risk and repair costs.

Net price for a 420i Sport is £30k as you’d get at least 20% off, so just over £40k for a 440i which doesn’t sound as bad and you’d get a pre reg one for £35k which is a lot of new car for the money.

I know mine will be soon and am hoping everything will be finished so I can get some good snaps for agreed valuation and that Footman James are better than adrien fux it up.

Yes, I got 20% off mine back in the day and it was £39k post-discount.
Mind you, at least likewise for a 7-series (in fact I see Broadspeed is offering 32% off a 740i!), and I doubt they set the warranty prices by reference to discounted prices!

I'm in Middlesbrough and, looking south, I can see a cloud of black smoke. That's beyond a warranty claim. Better call the insurers!

Turns out it was a flat battery. £200 later and we're back to business, unfortunately the stop/start has returned which might have been a clue that it was on the way out a while. With COVID it's had few good runs so hardly a shocker.

Funnily enough Fux are cheaper than FJ. Fux £147 V FJ at £205.

Will be interesting to see whether insurance is cheaper this year. Our renewal is due mid-November. Haven't heard anything yet.

So the renewal came in:
£832 multicar, breaking down as £644 for the BMW and £188 for the Fiat.
One phone call later and got it down to £710, breaking down as £167 for the Fiat and £543 for the BMW. Which is broadly what I paid last year.

The renewal was better (£134 V £208) and came with more fringe benefits. Fux doing the job for one, the agreed valuation and returning emails? Not really in the 21st century yet.

Kuga and Captur both up for insurance renewal at the start of December. Captur has increased somewhat due to wife's job, plus she reversed into a stationary car during lockdown (which didn't damage the Captur....)
Kuga insurance should actually drop a little to around £500 if I go from self&spouse to self only but...... I've not used it since just before Lockdown1, and it was SORNed for 2 months.... only time I have used it since is to "exercise" it and charge its battery every few weeks, otherwise I've been using the Fiesta. No reduction on the insurance for this... it's only done a few hundred miles since March, and around 2000 in the past 11 months. I am sorely thinking of SORNing it again from the end of November and then not insuring it. NCD will be retained for up to 24 months, but there's that nagging doubt that I may have to use it in emergency, so I should keep it insured. If only we knew how long lockdown and "working from home" would last and/or how long I will live !

You pay more for your Kuga insurance than I do for mine. It sounds like it’s a car you don’t need.
