www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-46480342Sadly it appears that there is nobody or no corporation willing to step in. From the BBC: "Since [then] we have worked tirelessly with the directors to identify a suitable individual or organisation who could take the project forward," joint administrator Andrew Sheridan said. "Despite overwhelming public support, and engagement with a wide range of potential and credible investors, it has not been possible to secure a purchaser for the business and assets." RIP Bloodhound and good luck to all those who now find themselves out of work just as Christmas approaches

I’ve been following it for a number of years. It’s a pity. They’ve gone so far but they just seem to have run out of funding as they’re reaching the end of it. I’m surprised that it’s been difficult to get corporations to sponsor them, but then again, they probably don’t stand to gain a lot from doing that. I did like the idea that my dads name was going to travel at over 1000 mph though!

Perhaps they just took too long to get the job done. Priorities change and this change has been coming for a while.

Anyone could pay to have their name or the name of a loved one written on the tail fin. A bit like sponsoring a brick in a new hospital.

The trouble with this Bloodhound thing was that it was a vanity project and when you're looking for funds from people with vanities it's someone else's vanity project. There are enough loons with dosh around to fund this kind of thing but it is forever associated with Noble and Green as builder and pilot respectively so if I'm Lord Fatwallet and come in at this late stage it's never going to be the Land Speed record shattered by the team put together by Lord Fatwallet is it?
In addition there are a lot of Lord Fatwallets out there that would be too concerned about the image given out by funding the needless burning of carbons to beat a record already held by the same team. If they were trying to build a 1,000mph car out of recycled plastic that ran on captured cow farts and solar energy they'd probably find a sponsor pretty quick.

It's heresy to say this here, I'm sure, but isn't half the problem that this is just pointless? It's not that's amazing when it's 'just' a case of strapping on a bigger rocket. There's a lot of talk about inspiring a new generation of engineers but there are far more interesting engineering challenges, like making trying to build a 1,000mph car out of recycled plastic that ran on captured cow farts and solar energy.

That's why I put 'just' in commas. I don't underestimate the technical complexity but for the audience it isn't that amazing to the point nobody really cares. The impression is that it's a case of 'just' strapping on a bigger rocket.

Plus the Yanks will just beat the record a few weeks/months later anyway (delete as applicable).

I know it’s not the same, but strapping a Tesla to that rocket was probably more innovative and inspiring than a very fast rocket car. Certainly seems to have got more press.

It made pretty much every newspaper and news channel in this country, though Musk did then ruin all the good work by becoming the least cool person to smoke a joint. Regarding Bloodhound, I think the trouble with getting a donor at this late stage is that Lord Fatwallet is only going to give them the dosh if his company name took centre stage. That’s not going to please all the sponsors who’ve already donated only to see it repainted red with a big Virgin (or Emirates etc) logo on the side!

That being said, it is the only way THEIR company names bet aired at all. Otherwise their money is wasted. My problem is the time they have taken to get the job done with a lot of talk and no action.

Yeah, it was a nice space story, what with the David Bowie song and all, but it was nothing to do with the US land speed record attempt. I doubt it has been as inspirational as Bloodhound has been to young people on its tours round STEM colleges.

Getting news through this morning via one of the engineering industy publications that the project has been saved by a Yorkshire entrepreneur. All jobs on the project secured. This sounds like fantastic news - not likely that there will be an update until after Christmas, so fingers crossed....... UPDATE: It's reached the BBC now: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-bristol-46591860
