Took my car in for its first service today and it needs some sort of update (will find out more when I collect it), which they thought would be 2 hours so OK for me to work there and wait, but when they plugged it it in, it said 3-4 hours. So I could either rebook or they would lend me a demonstrator as all the load cars were out. I took the offer of a demonstrator.
I've got a pretty much brand new (1,300 miles, built in September) X4 2.0d M Sport Auto, with the M Sport plus pack and other than metallic paint, no other extras that I've noticed.
First impressions....it's not a looker and I don't really get it, as the driving position doesn't feel much higher than a normal hatch/saloon and quite a bit lower than the X3 I had on holiday, plus there is there is less space inside and a smaller boot. I know it's damning with faint praise, but the X3 looks better as well. It doesn't pass the 'sitting behind myself' test, but it is close, legrooms is just OK but my head touches the roofing. There is more rear legroom and headroom in the Golf, although that does have a smaller boot.
The interior is OK, tried to compare it to the Golf rather than the 7 which is difficult because there are bit that look similar, but only the steering wheel compares, it's interesting (only to me!) to spot the difference and there are a lot. I don't think there is much in the interior build/perceived quality between the X4 and the Golf, the X4 just edges it but doesn't feel worth £10k+ more. One tip, if you ever need to adjust your seat after you've bought the car, don't get a BMW with manual seat adjustment.
By far the worst thing about it is the ride, which is awful. It's really firm over any bump, even the small ridges on a pretty smooth dual carriageway and it's really uncomfortable around town. I could probably live with the firm ride if that was it, but it still rolls a fair bit and the vertical movement/bounce is significant enough for me to feel a bit car sick after 17 miles / 30 mins. The Golf isn't as firm as this when it's in Race mode and that has very little movement/roll to compensate.
Performance is fine, but it does feel slow compared to what I'm used to and the gearbox works a lot better than Autos used to with the 2.0d engines.
I think it's expensive, discounted price for this particular car with a fairly basic spec is just over £45k.
Ending on a positive. The engine refinement is very good, it's smooth and quiet, just having the radio/music on low volume will be enough to drown it out even using all the revs and on the same journey but in reverse where the 750 did 31.5mpg, the X4 did 46.4mpg. Well worth the extra fuel though.
I like the colour too (Phytonic Blue).
