The mis-fire could just have been a bit of dirt in the fuel or air system. A few weeks ago, our tractor developed an infuriating habit of running for a few minutes and then dying. After re-priming the fuel pump it would start and run only to do the same thing. I feared a new fuel pump would be needed. But after a few days, there was a huge cloud of black smoke out of the exhaust and its been fine ever since.

After re-priming the fuel pump it would start and run only to do the same thing. I feared a new fuel pump would be needed. But after a few days, there was a huge cloud of black smoke out of the exhaust and its been fine ever since. It happened to the little three cylinder loader tractor last week. It wouldn’t run and when the pipe from the tank to the pump was removed, the metal fitting was chocked full of old bits of broken down fuel hose. It had new fuel hoses last year as they were perishing but running the tank low had disturbed all the bits!
