XF 3.0d S Sport brake in silicon silver.. 19MY, so it gets some nice new bits to lift the ambience (standard alcantara headliner, illuminated sill kick plates) plus some NVH upgrades. Why do I have a sport brake ? - because the saloon has been taken off the list. It's definitely softer than the saloon and feels a bit boaty - I need to mess around with the configurable dynamics. Added - profile shot of a corris grey car (to illustrate the overhang)

I like the fact that these ones don't have that stupid black D pillar that the previous gen had.

That would make a perfect replacement for my Benz. Very nice indeed.

So close to being a really good looking estate, but the rear overhang is much too long (or the wheelbase too short), which seems to be a current JLR thing as the Discovery and Velour are as bad.
Nice colour and wheels and good to hear the standard spec is moving back up to what you’d expect from a Jaguar.

The previous gen is the best looking estate car ever.

I like it a lot. Not sure the overhang is too bad on these but can't actually remember seeing one for real....
Has the whole of the saloon range been taken off the price lists or just the 3.0d?

Plus, you can always paint the pillar in body colour.

I haven't noticed an excessively hangy over hang (corris grey pic added for clarity).
Ref lists, it's an internal management car listing, not the official product offering that has changed.

The overhang looks Ok on the side on picture, but whenever I see one on the road it’s the thing that stands out, almost like the design was complete and someone made them make the boot just a bit bigger. Maybe it’s the lights or the shape rather than the actual overhang? Sounds like it’s just me that thinks it!

The overhang just looks clumsy. I’ve seen a few on the road and from behind they just look awful and heavy. Same with the current Discovery which gives the impression of having an over stuffed rucksack on its back. It’s not a bad looking car generally but proportionally the E class and 5 series wagons look much more right, if that’s the correct term. Neither the XE or current XF look as distinctive as the first XF which really elevated Jaguars styling to a new level.

That is nice and an XF probably doesn't get much better than that.
Whats the mood like at JLR currently Pete given the news coming out? I guess the electric revolution can't come quick enough.

I'm not seeing that at all. The proportions would be completely wrong with a longer wheelbase and it would lose a lot of the practicality if the overhang was less. A great looking estate.

The overhang on this doesn't look as big as the Legacy's did, relative to the wheelbase, and I really like this a lot.
Pity I can't afford one!

Great looking car. Definitely on my list to replace the merc when it goes back. In fact, joint top with the current XC60.

I spoke to someone today who is looking in to the feasibility of fitting all lamp posts with electric vehicle charging points and some means of payment. I hope they have a unified electric connection sorted before they start to roll that one out - and drunks had better be very careful as they stumble between parked cars when crossing the road because every lamp post will have a trip wire (or two)!

Bit of a cul de sac technology wise though. I’d be spending my time looking at wireless charging, surely that’s the future?

I really hope big diesels survive the next few years - I went out for an early morning drive on Saturday and despite never once straying past 3000 rpm (being gentle), the seamless grunt and resulting pace is fantastic.
I don't want a small capacity turbo four or a mid output petrol six in a car like this - it's got to be a sledgehammer diesel or a supercharged V8 (bottom line - 500 ft lbs + )
You can feel the extra heft of the SB in turn in and braking, but it's a marginal degradation and the softer ride is a fair trade off.
In terms of FG - the alcantara headliner is awesome and I've got a fixed panoramic roof (doesn't open, but has an electric blind) that is very pleasant.
As a 19MY, it gets a suite of NVH actions to increase the peace - it's not fair to compare an estate to a saloon, but the 19MY SB is quieter than an 18MY saloon.
Overall, it's all rather lovely.

Unless you've experienced the big diesel push in the back, it is difficult to appreciate just how much of a loss it will be if they pull the plug on them. I really enjoy quick effortless progress with overtaking just happening without a thought and at the end of it you've still travelled well over 40 miles for every gallon.

It's not just the grunt but the sound.
I think the E39 530d I had is comparable on power with the current 320d but where the 530 had 'go' everywhere the 320 has noticeable lag and while it will really shift if you want it to you need to make a real effort.
In addition I don't think the 320 would show in excess of 50mpg on the economy swingometer while cruising on the flat at a steady 100 whereas the 530 would.

I agree, big torque is addictive and can be really enjoyable. I’m a huge fan of properly effortless performance and the bigger the car the more essential it is. You need to step up quite a bit with a petrol engine to get the same feeling, for example swapping yours for a 440i would feel like quite a step back on the effortless scale. I also like like the way the big BMW diesels sound, just not as much as their V8s The Golf is quick but needs revs to really ‘go’, which suits a small ‘sporty’ hatchback, but it wouldn’t work in anything bigger. The XF sounds great.

When I first saw pics, I thought the overhang too long. But now I've seen a few on the road, they look really good to me.
I see that Jag are now doing 0% APR on XE's and XF's, including the XF estate.
I'm glad you like the alcantara headlining - is it black? Now I've had black suedecloth headlining in the XFR, it has become one of those really cool bits of FG. Totally pointless but it does somehow make the whole interior feel way more special.

Alcantara headlining is one thing that is missing from my 7 that I would have chosen if I’d ordered a new one (£825 option), agree that it does make an interior feel more special. I would have to break anyone’s fingers if they messed with it though

I think we could, yes and it ticks the effortless box as well. With more range and quicker charging I’d be interested.
