I’m very much enjoy my git-plated, tinted windowed, bling wheeled shiny black urban tractor. I’m aware some aren’t fans but I simply don’t give a shit. I love it. JLR should use that as a strapline on their advertising. It'd be quite refreshing.

I really like it and as long as you do, that's all that matters.

They don't get any better looking with exposure.
The Disco 4 may look a bit old next to them but its still much better.

I don't really have a problem with the Discovery back end but I wonder if a square plate would have been better?

In the first instance a plate in the middle would've been better - you can see from the 4 that there's a reason for the plate offset but on the new one it doesn't make sense visually.
I don't like the shape of the rear when viewed from the side or 3/4 either, it's too tapered somehow and that appears to make it look like an even longer overhang.
It's not important though, I'm never going to own one.

It was a Discovery 3, but agree with your point and the tapered rear/long overhang issue is one shared with other recent JLR products, as I mentioned in the XF thread.

The offset plate on the previous models made sense as it was done for practical reasons. With the new one it's done for style as it lacks quite a lot of the practicality and usefulness of the older models and it was that practicality and usefulness that set a Discovery apart from its rivals. Dropping the split tailgate is a real loss and the folding down flap that has replaced it isn't an adequate substitution. For example, I have kayaks and stand on the lower part of the tailgate with the upper part closed in order to access the roof. Even on the Volvo I was able to stand on the rear bumper, something you can also do on my version of Discovery, to get better access to the roof. You can't do either on the new one so you need a set of step ladders. That's not to say the new one isn't a good car, it is and I don't mind the looks. It's just a shame that it's becoming a bite more Range Rover and a bit less Discovery and it's likely the Defender will do the same.

Presumably the FFRR and Spurt are slowly edging upmarket so the Discovery is aiming to fill that gap - moving away from the practicality angle towards a more stylish yet cheaper than a FFRR area? Then the Defender will go into the slot vacated by the Disco and that'll leave a gap, if they want, for a more hairshirt vehicle to fill the former Defender marketplace?

I expect the next FFRR will be trying to rub shoulders with the Bentgayer and its ilk. Which will leave the RRS ad Disco 5 a clearer market. I agree - the new Defender will be spiritual successor to the Disco 3/4.
