Will they take a FIAT 500 in part exchange?

Given what the previous owner traded it in for, I think he was perhaps lamenting the lack of horse power (and possibly build quality)

Good spec, but it’s not an attractive car and the details don’t help.

Would you really choose this over an MX5?

Would you really choose this over an MX5? No, but my wife would. She doesn't like the MX5.

I hope that wasn't in a garage near Jeff before the restoration began ! How on earth do they justify the price?

I hope that wasn't in a garage near Jeff before the restoration began ! How on earth do they justify the price? It is such a deeply, deeply lovely thing that I am sure there are many, myself included, who would willingly pay the price to add it their collection if the funds were available.

If I had the money...... I'd rather have a new 8-series

A frankly ridiculous price but if you can afford it.. Mind you, if I could afford it, the first thing I'd do is peel those bloody awful gold chav stripes off it.
The steering wheel looks like a Halford's special from the 90s too.

The classic car market has gone utterly bonkers.

The classic car market has gone utterly bonkers. And so has the housing market (around our way anyway). It reminds me of the feeling of impending doom that I had pre the 2008/09 crash!

I've never driven one of the newer Mondeo's but I have been seeing a few about recently as well and they do look good. I reckon there must have been a massive release of very recent vehicles on to the market but they are great value for what is nearly a new car and as with Ford, they will be very well equipped. My sister in law's Kuga has heated windscreen, heated seats front and back, electric tailgate, keyless access, sunroof, etc etc and it wasn't even top of the line.

The Mondeo estate is huge, though..... much longer than the Kuga

Based on my experience of them, after the BMW, you will find the handling to be well up to standard, the ride superb, the engine refinement so-so and the interior disappointing. Overall they are excellent cars, they eat the miles and are well worth a look, but just lack the feel-good factor.

Overall they are excellent cars, they eat the miles and are well worth a look, but just lack the feel-good factor. One of my friends has had a 63 plate Focus followed by a 61 plate Kuga and your points are accurate, for those 2 vehicles at least. The Kuga was quite surprising in its handling but the dash was uninspiring, the Focus less so but still not wonderful. From the photos the Mondeo looks nicer again. The car I linked to is only a couple of miles away from home so I might drop in when I'm off on Friday to have a closer look. I had intended going to get a test drive of the Fiesta ST as well.......... Arnold Clark in Paisley have a Vignale version of the Mondeo with 4wd. I bet there aren't many of them.

It's very nice that but I would leave the wheels black - they match the stripes and the black trim on the rest of the car.

That is very nice and very "you" colour wise. I'd agree re the wheels - silver would be best. And having thought that we wanted a Mini with bonnet stripes, we're happy that ours has not got them, so I'd get them removed. Then bob could agree with me re the wheels ;-) Have you got the Mini itch then?

Have you got the Mini itch then? Yes, ever since having enjoyed so much the Cooper D that Avis bestowed on me for two weeks in Italy last August.
Think it would make an excellent replacement for our 500, which my wife is starting to get bored with after nearly 6 yrs.
Only problem is that Mrs RT is not particularly fond of Minis and would much rather have an Abarth 595 notwithstanding that objectively it is nowhere near as good or modern a car. Unlike me, she didn't like the one we had last summer, primarily as she claimed she couldn't find a comfortable driving position.

Only question is what version. Part of me thinks a Cooper would be more fun than a Cooper S notwithstanding the performance deficit. I've read that the 1.5 three is much more amusing engine than the 2.0 four in the Cooper S.

I've read that the 1.5 three is much more amusing engine than the 2.0 four in the Cooper S. What seats did your Cooper hire car have? The standard Cooper seats are pretty flat and not very comfortable, having tried them. The sports seats, in the Cooper sports (if a new one) or the sports seat upgrades in older ones are much more comfortable. Standard seats - Sports seats -
I now qualify for a Mini anorak. Actually that should be MINI anorak of course....... Personally, if battling an Abarth 595 and for city driving, I'd go for a Cooper S automatic with sports seats.

Standard seats - unusually for a MINI, it seemed to have entirely avoided a visit to the options list.
Perhaps you are right on the seats, but I think it was more that she felt she couldn't get close enough to the pedals. She's quite short - 5"2, albeit that isn't excessively short for a woman.
The idea of having an automatic MINI Cooper S is not one I am reconciled to. I've not once sat in our 500 and wished it had an automatic gearbox. It doesn't fit with the nippy little character of the car (IMHO). Yes, I know there are paddles but it's just not the same. I almost never use them in the 4GC and only ever used them in the M5 because the automated changes were so awful.
