Not sure my laptop speakers allow a proper assessment of soundtrack, but that's one pointless, pig-ugly car!

I rather like the look of the X2, mind you it fails the practicality squared-off rear end test as far as I'm concerned.

Not pretty but it ceraianly isn't pointless judging by the number SQ3 and 5s that Isee. Presumably BM are happy to go with this for the extra profit on the more expensive models and even if its shit to drive nobody will complain as its been tested at the Nurburgring ergo it must be fantastic!

I think we all know that pointlessness and marketing potential happily co-exist!

It's depressing to see they're calling a puny 4 pot 2 litre by the 35i name though. Is the X2 available with a 6 pot at all?

It is a bit, but not sure 300hp and 330lbft is ‘puny’, even if it is a 4 pot. The 6 cylinder cars are 40i now....only 10 away from mine now! Only 4 pots available in the X1/X2 and the new 1 series is likely to be the same. Jaguar have it right with their engine badging policy.

I bet his front tyres were for the bin after that. I don't mind the shape of the X2 but a 300hp version is probably a bit pointless. Just buy a Golf R.

A Golf R would be what I’d have too, although if your Mrs prefers SUVs, it kind of has everything covered subject to it driving reasonably car like.
I think it’s because of the way the engine is mounted that the 6 won’t fit (that applies to the new 1 series too)
It’s not going to go as well , or sound as good as the 6. But they’re impressive figures and definitely not puny
If Tony Lewis at berry Heathrow can do a deal similar to what he did for my mates M140i, then it’s on the shortlist for sure

Indeed, 35i used to mean straight six – looks like the 40i models get that treatment now. I’ll just add a typical bore comment, wish it had a six. BMW actually put a six in the original X1, but it never came to Europe - perhaps the only way of making such an ugly thing remotely appealing.
Wonder if these downsized units are necessarily a good thing, in light of WLTP. A lot of four pots have had their outputs reduced, but cars like the M140i, 340i and other six-cylinder units from other manufacturers have not.
I always remember reading in Autocar a while back that their long-termer F-Type V6 was getting better consumption than the 718 Cayman.
With this X2, I hope, just like Porsche, that profits made from these SUV’s can be invested in six-cylinder, RWD machines with manual gearboxes. Make an X2, X2.5 or whatever, but please also make a RWD, six pot 2-Series, 2-Series Gran Coupe, manual M3…

Unless they pull a Volvo and find a way to drop a straight six in a transverse engine bay, it'll only ever have 4 bangers. We all know that BMW's badging has made no sense for a long time.

please also make a RWD, six pot 2-Series… If the next 2 series is based on the 1, as is the current one, then you won't be seeing a RWD one again. I expect if BMW ever make another M2 it will be AWD.

The next 2-Series is supposedly RWD, presumably it will use the platform of the next 3-Series. That leaves the door open for six-pot models, just like the first two generations of the 1-Series did.
Demand for the M2 exceeded BMW's expectations, and the Competition version looks to be selling well as well. No doubt people from Golf's and Audi's would be interested in an AWD M2, but it doesn't appear that the M2 will go that way for the foreseeable future. Leave AWD for the monstrous power levels of things like the M5 and upcoming M8.

Demand for the M2 exceeded BMW's expectations, and the Competition version looks to be selling well as well. I think this has a lot to do with the pricing of the M3/M4 which have a list price of c£71K with required extras/packs and even with discount are still north of £64K. An M2 will leave you with plenty of change and just as big a smile.
