I’ve been thinking about getting a DI filter for a while as we have particularly hard water. Now I have a dark blue car with quite a bit of gloss black and lots of places for water to hide and then run out, I decided to get one. There are cheaper vessels from the window cleaning sites, but I went for the 7 litre raceglaze unit as it gets really good reviews and I’ll buy resin online in 25l bags which is a lot cheaper. First use today on the BMW. It was quite dirty as it hasn’t been washed for a couple of weeks, but I wanted to see how quickly I could get it to a decent standard with as little effort as possible. I used Bilt-Hamber snow foam from a sprayer as normal, wheels first, then jet washed clean, sprayed the car, quick run over the wheels with a mitt while that did it’s magic and jet washed off with the DI water. All in, it took 30mins including putting the hose/pressure washer away. It definately helped that I polished it 2 weeks ago, but even so, I was really impressed. Not as much as Lindsay though, she was amazed to see me again so quickly! Shortly after rinsing The rear bumper was the dirtiest part of the car Dry and looks perfect, even on close inspection.

Looks like a very decent return for the money.

I've had one for ages, but haven't used it recently, as the resin died again. Without a pre-filter it doesn't last long at all, maybe 10 car washes...

They are! I’ve been given a link to a place that sells the virgin resin for a bit less, £60 + VAT. Be interesting to see how long it lasts, but whatever it is it will be worth it!

Or you can just move to Scotland where the water is lovely and soft and doesn't mark the car.

Life expectancy in soft water areas is generally shorter than in hard water areas. 5 years of working in the UK water industry in the mid 1990's taught me that, but I think that the reasons are still not fully understood.

Well I've finally joined the foam party.
I bought some Autoglym Polar Blast Snow Foam to try. I pressure washed the car first, then applied using a pressure washer mix bottle. Seemed to work pretty well on the Shogun - that was not too dirty. On the Jag, which was filthy, I did then have to go over it quickly with some shampoo to get it really clean. But it still cut the total time to wash down by a good margin.
I don't have a DI filter. What I do is towell off a lot of the moisture and then spray Autoglym Aqua-Wax on the still wet car and then dry off thoroughly. That seems to work really well and does not leave water marks.

Welcome! It also cuts downs on swirls because you get all the grit and most of the dirt off before touching the paintwork. I’ve changed to a hand pump sprayer now, cleans just as well but the dwell time is significantly less to get the same result. Aqua-wax is very good.

I thought you lot said not to pressure wash the car before applying the snow foam stuff?

I thought you lot said not to pressure wash the car before applying the snow foam stuff? I’ve never done it because it ‘clings’ better if you don’t. I’d probably just wash first it if there was a lot of mud on the car, but I’d let it dry before moving to the foam. If you did that in the Jag PG, try foam first next time. It also works a lot better if the paintwork is in good condition with a nice layer of something.

Snow foam is designed to be sprayed on to a dry car. It loosens the grip of dirt which, after 5 mins or thereabouts, can be pressure washed off. Make sure you never let snow foam dry on the car because it can (not does) leave difficult to remove marks.
I would never dry a car that I hadn't washed with a wash mitt because there will still be small dirt particles left on the paint after the snow foam. The purpose of the foam is to get rid of the majority of the dirt before you touch the paintwork. It isn't a guarantee of no swirls but it helps massively to reduce them.

I power washed the Jag first as that was how I interpreted the notes on the back of the Polar Foam about using it on a very dirty car. Right, now that the experts have spoken, next time I'll just foam it, rinse that off and then shampoo it.

Just wondering about the AG Aqua Wax. Do you literally spray it onto the wet paintwork, wipe, then done? No streaks or anything like that?

Another fan of Aqua wax here
As expected, a black car is a total fucking mare to clean and keep clean. The water marks and streaks if you don’t thoroughly dry off look horrendous and using a dry microfibre is harder work than expected with a black car because any residual moisture dries extra fast and leaves water marks that look even worse.
Thankfully, Aqua Wax makes drying off a dark coloured car a total piece of piss, because it makes drying the car so much easier and the residual haze is quickly polished off to a shine. The smell, the paint smoothness and the beading once applied is all a bonus.
10 quid including 2 microfibres is a bargain.

Impressive results, Martin. My car looks horrendous at the moment. Hopefully I will sort it later in the week if the weather is OK.

^^^ Yep.
Aqua Wax is great, so is the AG Polar Blast. Really impressed by this. As a pre-wash its terrific, especially at this time of year with how heavily soiled the paintwork gets.

Sorry about the resin Simon......
Agree re Aqua wax, but still really happy with the DI filter. Apply snowfoam through a hand sprayer, let it dwell for 5mins max while I get the pressure washer and hose out, blast it off and a final rinse with the DI water and the car is done. Great at this time of year.
