Saw a high mileage 5 Series for sale 2 days ago and I can’t shift the desire to look at it.
It’s a 2010 535Xi Touring and is loaded with everything- nice leather, metallic, panoramic roof, active suspension, automatic gearbox. It’s immaculate and is a good price. The previous owner has been using it for a long commute of about 70 miles each way, every day but not in traffic.
The mileage is 149,000 but it comes with the full extended warranty for another 2.5 years or 50,000 miles.
It’s about $10,000 which is a good price, it’s a very good price for a BMW like that here.
I’ve always wanted a 5 series touring and have to sai I’m tempted. It’s also more economical than the RX300 which would possibly become a 3rd car...
It’s also an easier sell to the wife than my constant desire for a hot hatch, being a more mature vehicle that will fit the family quite well...
It also fits my job role well as middle management...
It’s also 4wd so is great for mountain trips with the family in winter...
Maybe I should follow up and see if I can get a test drive...

With that warranty it must be worth a look.

That isn’t really high mileage for USA distances though is it? As long as it has been serviced then I think that is worth a look.

As a 2010 is that an E60 or an F10? It’s an E60, which is a car that I’ve always liked the look of, especially in touring guise. I last drove one, a 530D years ago and liked it then, but the twin turbo petrol has always appealed to me. The interior is black leather with dark brown wood, so while it’s a bit dull, it’s also not in your face and is something I could live with.

At that price, spec and with that warranty, that's got to be worth a look. And we all know where "a look" will lead.... so we'll look forward to hearing you have bought it ;-)

Make sure the warranty covers the rear wiring loom, I think the E60s were still noted for having issues with that.

Check if it's been run by Martin's American cousin (Marty).

So the car is no longer for sale. I didn’t get it but having spoken to herself, we’re going to be looking at changing the car(s). Both are high mileage and are running well right now so it’s time for a change.
We sold our house in Dublin so have cash coming along (Mainly for a House here but we are buying in a cheaper market so have some car cash)
Living in California means there’s a lot of American stuff available, but to be honest, apart from an itch that I’ll scratch sometime that’s called a pickup, I’m not interested in any American cars.
We need a 7 seater and potentially a more normal car. The 7 seats aren’t something we need all the time but are useful as we have many occasions where it’s more than us 5.
So I’m starting to look at X5’s with the 3rd row of seats. Believe it or not, BMW sell the twin turbo 3.0 diesel here and they’re fairly popular, are within my price range and also have 4wd which is great for trips up the mountains in the winter.
We’ll probably sell or trade in our van. I’m probably going to keep the Lexus as a 3rd car as it owes me nothing and costs next to nothing to keep on the road. Plus, it’s a car I’m happy to lend to people when they visit. Not to mention that my eldest will be learning to drive in 2 years, which means she can have a well built car that is not fast and drinks a decent amount so limits her options!
As regards a second car, I think the mrs. needs a hot hatch. There’s plenty of Golf GTI’s around...
