So unlike me to discourage any car buying but this morning I had a chat on the phone with someone who was coming in to see me this afternoon and he asked what I thought about the new CLS. I quite like it personally but he was concerned it was going to cost too much - he was considering a CLS53.
Between the phone call and the meeting, I looked it up on the Merc website. Without extras apart from paint, it is £74,735. Mercedes want £17,035 up front and £829 a month for 4 years (GFV is only £28,000). That is £1,184/mth or £14,207 p.a.
I told him to look elsewhere. Once they slap the 10% import tariffs on it after Brexit, they will become rarer than a rust free Lada.
He's going to look at a 540i XDrive and a used A8 which caught his fancy www.lookers.co.uk/audi/used-cars/8556577-audi-a8-55-tfsi-quattro-340-ps-tiptronic/ but S5 Sportsbacks are pretty well discounted just now so he will enquire when he is at the Audi dealer.

Would he consider a 3 series? The new one is due before Christmas I think and there are now plenty of pre-reg top of the range ones (estates at least) kicking around with a starting price reflecting a discount of at least 20% and presumably the dealers will be keen to shift these so there should be scope to get the price and/or finance costs down even further.

I think the 3 is too small for him and he likes a saloon, preferably 4WD since he travels all over the country. I tried to get him to consider a diesel because of his 20K a year but he won't consider it. Personally I see little difference in driving the A9 on cruise control at 60mph in a 530D as opposed to a 540i!

Pity he wouldn't consider a 335d saloon then. Can't see why he'd need more space than a 3 to be honest, the CLS isn't exactly spacious for load and passenger carrying.
For the A9 he'd be as well in a Fiesta or similar.

I could always suggest one of those Japanese "vans" you posted about recently - we were up in St Andrews at the weekend and passed the garage on the way home - he has rather a lot of the things!

They're great and he has one less now

You were right. I looked at the numbers on a CLS as well, it’s expensive for what it is. I’ve seen a couple on the road now and it’s not a great looking car, maybe that’s why it looks so sad?
