I’ve been living in the city where the fire has hit in NorCal. It’s been a very bizarre situation to be in for the last few days. Thankfully I’m on the side of the city that didn’t have to evacuate, but it’s hit the city hard. About 40% of the population has had to evacuate. The fire has burned 94,000 acres as of this evening and 6 lives have been lost. On Thursday evening, I faced the possibility of having to leave and went to pack my bags. It’s amaIng how a situation like that can hone your senses to what is really important. I grabbed paperwork, photos and a few items that were given by grandparents etc. and looked around the house and realised nothing else is important. Thankfully, the rest of the family have been back in Ireland and I’ve only had me and the dog to be concerned about. Work was closed on Friday and it’s the same on Monday. I have a lot to do there but we can’t get access as it’s behind the fire line- it’s not at risk, they’re just keeping people away from the danger areas. I had friends staying over when they were told to move and I’ve had other friends who have lost everything. Today a group of us went out and gave drinks, food and cool packs to the first responders. They were so thankful and this is after many of them have worked multiple 24/30 hr shifts in the last week. It’s funny how a week can change your perspective on what’s important in life.

Glad to hear you’re less at risk but yes, in the end “stuff” can be replaced and only vital things are important.

Good to hear you are safe. Stay safe!
Lots of my ex-colleagues had to evacuate their homes in the Santa Barbara fires last year (or the year before, I can't remember..). Like you they all seemed very philosophical about any "stuff" left behind, which as you say is a lesson to all of us. Luckily the fire never reached their homes.

Glad to hear that you’re not in the fire line but also that you’re able to help those less fortunate that are. It’s times like these where community spirit really shows.

Good news, stay safe. I have heard of numerous folk getting provisions/cold drinks to firefighters and it is good for an old Trekkie to hear. Some of these firefighters have died after all.

Yes, stay safe. We are currently in a high fire risk zone so I was thankful of some rain over the last few days. Wildfires must be terrifying.

Have been off the forum for a few weeks so apologies for no update.
The fire is still burning but not growing. It’s been at the same size at 229,651 acres and 95% contained. The containment means it’s burning within the previously burned area and has been increasing every day. When it hits 100%, the fire will be out.
There have been 8 deaths, over 1,000 houses destroyed and the air quality is atrocious. However, I’ve never seen a community come together like this one has. Businesses helping others, people giving stuff away to those with nothing, inviting in families who have lost everything. Sky news ran a report on the generosity of the people here which was kind of amazing!
Going out in dust masks has become the norm for the last few weeks but the smoke clears when it gets warmer around noon.
Some friends lost their homes which was devastating for them, the fire moved so quickly they literally had no time to do anything but get in the car and drive.

Glad to hear you are still safe. In adversity, humankind seems to rediscover a true sense of community. How great it could be if we kept that all the time!
