There were reports in the business press on Manday that Sergio Marchionne - creditied with the massive turnaround at FIAT and Chrysler - had stepped down due to health issues following an operation on his shoulder.
It's just been reported that he's now died!

I read yesterday that he was in a coma after an embolism (during cancer surgery) and there was 0 chance of recovery. I guess once in the coma they had to move fast and the press releases were a little vague.

Yes very sad news. RIP and condolences to his family. 66 is no age really.
There are lots of conspiracy theories around. The original press release said he stepped down due to complications from shoulder surgery and then they announced he died. But when he died I read that he actually had (was rumoured to have) lung cancer and that he died from that. But that this has been suppressed due to the heavy cigarette industry involvement in racing and long time sponsorship of Ferrari by tobacco interests.

We have a family friend whose husband (deceased, cancer) worked in tobacco sales, as does as her son, who cannot be convinced that cigarettes cause lung cancer.

I'm sure some interview articles I read said Marchionne smoked a lot. As Bob says though it won't be that at fault, no way. A couple of years ago a relative who was a heavy smoker told us that since the smoking ban in Scotland the incidenece of lung cancer among bar staff had gone up. Thid from a well educated person working in a role within social care. He saw what it was he wanted, not the truth.

The articles I have read have suggested he was a workaholic fuelled by smoking and caffeine but gave both up a year ago.
Now dead - make of that what you will.

I was going to make a crack about it not only being their cars that have a limited lifespan but decided it was tasteless and too early.

Read all the obits now and he was a remarkable man. I wasn’t a fan of his when he knifed Luca di Montezemelo but he turned two shite car companies around and understood the needs of an industry he was an outsider to.
Yes, he was a chain smoker and workaholic so his demise was likely at an earlier age than others. Best fact? He loved fast cars but in Italy was forced by the government to be driven in an armoured limo with outriders so couldn’t enjoy them as much as he’d want.
