I have a few machines at home that like a drink of unleaded. Quad bike, lawn mower, flail mower, strimmer etc. I have a couple of 20L jerry cans for the quad and flail which need filling 2-3 times a year. I tend to fill a couple of 5 litre mower cans once or twice and the strimmer can (50:1 mix) as needed, but usually 2-3 times a year. I took 5 empty containers to my local Tesco this afternoon and was told while filling up that I was breaking the law and I was only allowed to fill two containers. I politely argued the point then went around the corner to Morrisons when she turned the pump off. I had a quick Google and it turns out the Petroleum Consolidation Regulations state there are no limits to the number of containers. I emailed Tesco who replied that I was only allowed to store two containers in a vehicle. Storage under the regulations is different to transportation, (private individuals are exempt) so I have told them they are still wrong as I wasn't storing it. It really makes no odds, I will just go elsewhere, but Hi-Viz jobsworth coming over to you while filling my cans got me irritated! At least they didn't tannoy me. That has happened in the TVR when I have been told to shut the boot before they would let me fill up and I have had to drag them out of the kiosk to show them where the filler is.

Re your "shutting the boot" comment, I quite often go into the boot and/or back of the car while filling up to check the models (r/c planes, that is!) are secure and the like. No-one has ever said anything and I fill up almost exclusively at Tesco's; always have done.
As for filling containers etc, the only rules I've seen posted are that they must be "proper" marked containers; no limit on umbers etc.

Most of that is well out of date. www.hse.gov.uk/fireandexplosion/petroleum-regulations-2014.pdfI am allowed to store more than 30 litres up to a limit of 275 litres without a license if I write and tell them. All of my cans were approved containers and there is no limit to the number I can fill. There is a limit to the number I can store in a vehicle, but there is no limit to the number I can transport in a vehicle as I am a private individual. She was being a jobsworth.

The one that makes me laugh is the ban on mobile phones on forecourts even though there has never been a case in recorded history of a mobile phone sparking a fire in a petrol station. As I have pointed out in the past if it were an issue we'd all have to push our cars away from the pumps to a safe distance before starting up using the massive batteries under the bonnet of a motor vehicle.

What's even funnier about that rule is with the Shell garage over the the road from work, there is the option of paying at the pump...........by scanning a QR code with your mobile!! A few weeks ago I spotted a guy filling up 2 empty 2l Evian (or similar) bottles with petrol, he them whipped out a carrier bag from his pocket, put them in it and went off to pay. Many of these stupid rules is just arse covering because no one actually understands the law so better to be safe than sorry, I've heard of some petrol stations refusing to dispense fuel due to a door of the car being open, WTF is that all about.

I got stopped at a BP station one time because they wanted to check my 5l can had the right markings. Never happened before or since though so I presume the manager had recently been on a H&S course.

Ibruprofen and Paracetamol is another one at supermarket checkouts. The wife and I arrived at the checkout with 3 small boxes of Ibruprofen to be told that we couldn't buy more than two at a time. I pointed out that there were two of us so why couldn't we buy up to 4 at any one time but that was no good. I then took one box and went to a checkout nearby at which point I was told that I still couldn't buy that single box as I was already with a woman buying two boxes.
Needless to say if I ever decide to commit suicide it won't be with painkillers. I'll drive my car through the plate glass windows of Sainsburys.

After a night on the piss a few of us turned up at a McDonalds starving for a burger. Unfortunately the restaurant had just closed but then we noticed that, for some reason, the Drive Thru stayed open another half hour so we walked round to the window and placed an order - only to be told that no car meant no order. We suggested they imagine we were in a car, but no deal. Then we said could we wait until a car turned up, give them the money and let them place our order - again no. We couldn't produce a car, nor drive one in our pissed state so it looked like we were out of luck and we walked off. Then one of the lads noticed one of those wheeled bin/skip things they put the rubbish in. Cue me and a mate pushing this through the drive in to the window with another two lads sitting on top, one pretending to steer and work the gears. He even gave a little horn honk as he pulled up at the window. McDonalds burgers never tasted so good.

I tried to go through one on a pushbike once because I didn't have a lock with me and didn't want to leave it outside. They refused me, too. Oddly I have seen them serve motorcyclists so perhaps it's the lack of an engine they don't like?

I always understood that the 2 box/32 tablet limit was a voluntary one adhered to by all retailers. There were figures out some years ago which showed a marked decrease in attempted and completed suicides by Paracetamol since the introduction of the limit, which basically meant that particular goal had been met. It may impact on some people I agree, plus for a significant number of people one box would be sufficient to kill them, but there you go.
Some places do take the piss about these sorts of things though.

When I was racing the Caterham this was an occasional issue - I generally filled up the tow car, the Caterham on the trailer, and three 20l jerry cans - two mounted in the trailer and one in the boot of the tow car. Usually that went fine, but every now and then (especially around Goodwood) women (it was always women) working in the petrol station would moan at me and tell me that due to local licensing regulations I could only fill one 5l container.
The ibuprofen thing is nuts as well - can you even easily kill yourself with it? I know co-proxamol and alcohol together was a thing, but you can't easily buy that.

There has been a bit of email tennis with Tesco and I have had confirmation from above that I can fill any number of approved containers. I have asked them if they will tell the woman at Tesco Consett that.

To the best of my knowledge, Co-Proxamol is no longer available. Legally, at least.
