An absolutely superb couple of days camping, hiking, driving and plane spotting in Wales. We were just south of Snowdonia, camping in Abergynolwyn, hiking and plane spotting in Dolgellau (known as the Mach loop), and exploring the awesome A-roads in the area: smooth, twisting and lots of overtaking. We also took a trip up more towards Snowdonia late afternoon on Thursday, and in between the tiny hamlets we passed, the roads soon became tight, heavily cambered and very dusty. It felt like a mini WRC stage. Four hot hatches - my ST, a M140i, S3, and Mk5 Golf GTi. It didn't disappoint:

That looks stunning. Do the cars have to be blue to be in your group?

Great pics. Always seems to be a lot of Welsh there when I visit that lovely part of the country.

Looks like a good trip. Is that Tal-y-llyn lake? It is . We sat and had a beer outside the hotel and pub (can’t remember What it’s called) in the most perfect weather . Great part of the world

I recently had cause to be in Wales and even me, staunch Englishman with a foreign-born mother ( ) have to admit they do scenery pretty well, although some can be pretty bleak too. Scale of it all makes you realise we humans are just a bunch of ants on the planet.

I've only tried holidaying in the uk once and really didn't enjoy it. To feel like I'm getting away I need a cultural change or a foreign language. I especially hate British holidaymakers. When its easier to get to France then Cornwall, I don't see the point.

We try and do a holiday in the UK with 2 of the dogs and one abroad; last year it was Addingham in Yorkshire in August and Thailand in october, this year we went to Wales and we are Thailand again in October. I can appreciate the issue with the British holiday maker and I completely agree, however we get an Air BnB, away from the tourist hot spots and have had no issue, it's cheap too; Wales for 5 nights was an apartment for £311.00. We do the same when abroad, we go to the areas where Brits aren't a common sight, or if you do bump into a Brit, they aren't the stereotypical lager swilling, tattoo'd shaven headed type.

When its easier to get to France then Cornwall, I don't see the point. Since having been with W2.0 we’ve had one U.K. break a year. Quite an eye opener for Me as I was of the same opinion as Ed. The key is to not try and make it the main holiday and choose a time when you can set your weather expectations. The lakes last Easter was great: it rained but we knew it would and the upside is that it’s the kind of place where the holidaymakers Ed speaks of do not care to go so it was delightful. Wales this Easter was the same with the added benefit of a couple of days of blazing sunshine, to the extent the girls were in the sea on Harlech beach. We stayed in a country house hotel on the way up which added to the trip. We’ve got our eye on Cornwall this coming Easter. As a Surrey man, Ed, you’ll find that a foreign language appears to be spoken in all these places. Even Kent!

As BB said, leaving the South East is going to be a cultural change for you ;-) There are so many places worth visiting in the UK, many totally unspoilt.

We had our summer holidays in France/Switzerland/Italy as a kid to get better weather. Lots of really nice areas, but I do like to go further afield for our main holiday and not the same place twice. Europe is really good for short breaks though, as there are lots of cities you can get to quickly and cheaply.
