Last nights episode was rubbish. A good driver and a gameshow host need the craziness of Flintoff to bring a road tip to life.
Equally, Flintoff's skills don't translate into making him a decent car reviewer. The Corvette segment was crying out for Harris.

Their own statement highlights that this has nothing to do with climate but is, as ever, the politics of envy. Tyred of SUVs member, Fin, told BBC Radio Scotland: "We feel we need to do this because we need to point to the people who are responsible - rich people in the global north.
“This is a minor inconvenience that is not going to disrupt them in a huge way. What is really going to disrupt people's lives and kill them is the climate crisis caused by rich people - basically SUV owners."I bet they didn’t touch any old bangers running round which will push out far more noxious emissions because they’re ignorant of facts due to being blinded by green eyed monsterism. (By the way, I actually have green eyes and find my own language offensive so like John Cleese I’m cancelling myself.) Yep, My old Zafira spits out circa 190 Co2/km. Just a tiny bit lower than a new Range Rover.

It looks a bit too Benidorm for me. I much prefer getting dragged up wet and windy hills against my will by Mrs Tim.... I’ve never been to Benidorm, but I doubt there are a lot of similarities and I guarantee the hotels and service are better here. It’s not somewhere we’d normally come on holiday as it’s a 2 day stopover location really (great for avoiding jet lag) but you have to make compromises when the kids are small. It’s the best balance between flight length and weather at this time of year. Now that’s my idea of hell, even more so if it’s supposed to be a holiday! Have to say Benidorm was a bit of a surprise when we visited over the summer. I was expecting something like the tv sitcom, and there is a part like that, but that’s not the majority. It has amazing beaches, a fabulous old town with lots of traditional Spanish tapas bars and it’s also very Spanish. The old town separates the two main beaches. The one to the north is more of what you might expect, the one to the south is way more sophisticated. There were beach libraries, very smart hotels and apartments, and the majority of people you hear are Spanish. We went on a day trip for a bit of a giggle, but were surprised by it.

Two grown men with man bags in one place, what are the odds?! This thread has revealed that garry and I are metrosexual men and Tim is borderline caveman 😆 Isn’t Tim Scottish? I think they call it a sporran up there.

I agree that MP salaries are too low. How many on this forum would be taking a pay cut if they became an MP? How many could not live their current lifestyle on an MPs salary?

I was in my local OPC today and there was a Gentian Blue 911 in the showroom and it had the red interior (and red brake calipers). I thought it looked really good. The steering wheel was black and the seat backs were black, as was the gearshift surround and the headlining. So it wasn't "too red" and it made a refreshing change from the black or dark grey interiors that most cars have. And very unusually, it also had a manual gearbox. Bravo indeed to whoever specced that car. So I think that the red interior, tastefully specced and with a complementary exterior colour would look very good on a Macan too. Where is your local OPC? I'd like to see that colour combo

I’ve run a Porsche through this ‘mid life’ period of circa 4 to 7 years old. Even though it was incredibly cheap for me (I got lucky with the used car price increases) I’d be cautious of doing it again. The problem is you start potentially running into mid life issues that may inhibit your enjoyment with the fear of a big bill around the corner. Again, I didn’t get hit with a big bill but I was increasingly aware that I was driving a 7 year old car that could throw up an expensive problem at any time. And Porsche’s do throw up some expensive problems.
I also can’t see the value in the Turbo. It’s riding the current wave of stratospheric s/h values that surely will correct at some time. I also can’t see how your wife would be persuaded to change one 4 year old car for a different 4 year old car.
The Macan perfectly fits your ‘Swiss army knife’ requirement that you mentioned somewhere. I’d spec the S you want and wait a year. Mrs RT should be able to see this as normal behaviour in the RT household - you buy new, keep for circa 4 years and replace whilst it still holds plenty of value and before it starts to require lots of mid life fettling.
Btw, I wasn’t much of a Macan fan until you started looking at them and now when I see one I think ‘yep, that’s a proper Swiss Army knife of a car’

I’d imagine your whole recovery and regen is far better on a pure EV than a hybrid, hence your better miles per kWh. Plus me using V-Power and petrol being currently expensive my cost per gallon for this one tank is way higher. My virtual figure is an amalgam of both electric and petrol running based on the costs of both fuels so it’s not a virtual figure for electric only. Good bit of equation is yours though and far less complex than the thing I built. I tried it on my electric only numbers and I get 55.90mpg equivalent. The penalty of lugging a turbocharged 2.0 engine about. Ok, I’d misunderstood what the virtual mpg figure represented. I love your car though. I think the the plug in hybrid is a great solution over the next few years and makes way more sense for most drivers. A car with sixty mile EV only range coupled with low bik tax (step forward x5) is on my etron replacement shortlist.

I’m surprised by the miles/kWh and the virtual mpg.
For the etron I worked it out like this:
1. Average consumption: 2.5 miles/kWh 2. Average price of petrol per gallon : £5,40 3. Cost of electricity: 17p per KWH 4. Number of kWH available for the price of a gallon of petrol: 31.8 5. EV cost in mpg equivalent : 2.5 x 31.8 = 79.4 mpg
I could be completely wrong, so feel free to rip holes in it!

Or when the NI rises start to bite in April. That will rather hasten the furlough schemes disappearance from recent memory. Starts to bite? My pay cheque already had a £300 bite out of it starting last month thanks to "enhanced tax reserving"! Amused I was not. What is enhanced tax reserving?

Can’t say I agree with Sunak not getting support. The conservatives prioritise winning above anything else. If they believe Sunak can win, they’ll support him.
His bigger problem will be if/when then general public realise he can’t walk on water. If something like stagflation hits the economy (Which it could, with rising inflation and flat salaries )he’s toast.

How much is it to charge an electric car at home from zero miles to something like 250miles of range? At pre increase electricity prices we reckoned on about £10 to completely charge it at home up to maybe 230 miles range which we might squeeze up to 250 miles using Eco mode. A car doing 40mpg would cost about £40 for the same distance. However if you charge up on the motorway at the rapid chargers, they cost 69p/kwh so the cost to "fill up" would be c£65. Agree on the circa £10 home charge. Last time I charged on the motorway it was at gridserve and it was 30p/kWh at a rapid charger. I’ve never spent more than £20 at a charging point.

If someone invented a mobile phone that would go 3 weeks without charging and when it did need charging, it could be done in 5 minutes using a readily-available energy source, I'm sure they would be on to a winner......... Said Nokia….. Just before the arrival of the iPhone.

One of my team runs his own car, an iPace SE. He was supposed to meet me at a Hotel just outside Edinburgh at 6pm and it’s a c4 hour journey from Warrington so he left at 1pm, with a full battery and time to charge at its only 250 miles. He arrived just after 9pm, having tried 6 chargers and ending up at a Lidl which wasn’t a particularly quick charger but at least it was working and he arrived with 45 miles range. I know he was particularly unlucky and it didn’t sound like he planned stops before he left, but 8 hours to do 250 miles….. I live another 100 miles further away but it took me just under 5 hours door to door and I had time to work at the airport and a bit on the plane, so lost under 3 hours in total. But surely he would have arrived with circa 45 miles of range if he’d driven directly from Warrington. It’s a 215 mile drive and the ipace surely has a real world range of a little over 250 miles ( Johnc?). Even so, there’s some decent charging stations at Gretna and on the m8 east of Glasgow, so a bit of a plan should have got him there. Saying that, charge station reliability is a serious issue.

That does feel insane! I think the problem is that the cost floor for building an EV is high due to batteries. This doesn’t really impact expensive EVs where the costs can be masked, but becomes very painful for lower cost versions, hence very little EV choice below 30k. Mini is the best example, where the stark price difference between EV and combustion versions of the same car are easy to see. I reckon nearly all EV buyers are company drivers taking advantage of bik. There is no way that the Fiat 500e could make any sense without huge financial incentives. The inflated new prices and the fact that most are bought by companies might lead to very large falls in value for 2 to 3 year old cars, as used to happen with the fleet Cortinas, Cavaliers, Vectras, Mondeos etc Wasn’t that a supply/demand imbalance issue? Saying that, I only plan to lease EVs for now because I don’t fancy a ride on a residual roller coaster.

Watched this on the carwow channel. It’s very smart. The plug in hybrid could be very interesting. I think the extended electric-only range means it will drop into the 7% bik tax bracket that bmw have made there own with the x5.

Talking of electric cars, my wife had another one of her periodic bouts of interest in chopping her car for a new electric one, and once again she just took one look at the amount they cost and went off into a sweary rant. And she has a point. Her 500 Twinair Lounge cost her £11k new in 2013. An equivalent electric one - so call it an Icon with the longer range - is, even after grants and discounts, a £25k car. That's just insane. That does feel insane! I think the problem is that the cost floor for building an EV is high due to batteries. This doesn’t really impact expensive EVs where the costs can be masked, but becomes very painful for lower cost versions, hence very little EV choice below 30k. Re the other car, how about a cheap lease? Skoda Octavia Estate 1.5 TSi is being advertised at £133 per month with £1,100 down on carwow. And its a towcar of the year winner in the 1400kg class, whatever that means!

How do you convince the public that you have a credible and coherent viewpoint? Perhaps you overwhelm them with evidence and logic. Perhaps you appeal to their higher values. …or you could just glue your head to the road!!!! Aristotle, Socrates and Plato must be lamenting the lack of superglue in their day.

Actually the Audi app that lets me cool the car down prior to jumping in is a great feature, especially over the summer. I simply start the air on as we’re about to head back to the car and I’m greeted with air conditioned loveliness as I open the door.
