We thought John Prescott was bad for having 2 Jags.
Turns out the recently departed CEO of General Electric, Jeff Immelt, liked to travel the world on company business with a backup plane following along. Just in case the first plane had any technical problems.
I find it astounding that something like that would go on in the modern world in a shareholder owned company.

GE are a set of c**nts. They wanted all their suppliers to give them 120 days credit. The biggest company in the world won't pay its bills in less than 4 months. In other words they want every SME to be their bank and finance their business.

My mate runs an airport outside London that's very popular with the business jet community. I went to visit for a coffee when I was driving past, this might have been about 5 years ago. In the lounge were a bunch of suits that I assumed were waiting for a flight and sure enough a flight turns up and they all shuffle out onto the tarmac to board the flight. An hour later, the same group shuffle off the flight and go on there way. When I ask what that was all about, I was told that the CEO of GE does a day in Europe every couple of weeks and he would fly in and meet the country managers of about 10 countries in a day and fly back to the states without ever getting off his jet. A not bad plan when you consider how many territories their in.

Someone should mention the words "video conferencing" to him. He couldn't get his duty free allowance by doing that!

Funny that video conferencing always gets mentioned but there is zero substitute for doing things in person, I wouldn't do half the business I do if I didn't get my arse on the road. I love the fact that guys on 7 figure incomes over here shit themselves because they haven't backed up their forecasts when the shit kicking CEO of GE is coming to town.

It must be a huge kick in the teeth to GE employees to hear that delightful piece of information on the same day the new CEO has announced thousands of redundancies in a cost-saving effort.

I agree with you concerning customers - I just flew via Schipol to Bergen for a 2 hour meeting there before returning the next day. When you're talking face to face you build a much better rapport up. When it's 10 country managers from the same country getting round the table for a monthly meeting video conferencing is the way to go.
