Mercifully usually on 3-4 times a week as I don't bother if I have no meetings. But Gillette's prices and (in particular) lack of availability of replacement blades is hacking me off. Anyone have anything cheap but effective and comfortable (insofar as these things go) that they would recommend? I keep seeing these banner ads for Harry's - an American outfit that does free delivery with lower prices than Gillette, but a similar number of blades and hinge-at-the=bottom system.

There's a couple that you see cleverly marketed - Harry's and Cornerstone. I'm convinced that it's old razor technology that has been bought up and re-launched with a new sales strategy. I shave everyday using the Gillette five blade thingy but I rotate the blades every 4 days, returning to the first one after a couple of weeks. A sleeve of 4 blades will then last 3 months easy.

Yes, I believe it was a tip of PG's (geddit?) a few years ago about rotating them and it does seem to work, but my gripes remain.

I mostly use an electric as the multi blade things irritate me.

I always found that they didn't get that close and irritated my face. Me too, my face feels like crap after an electric shave. It was a mate of mine who worked for Wilkinson Sword who gave me the tip about rotating blades as they found in tests that they didn't so mu blunt as start to turn over at the edge. A few days rest and a bit of "metal memory effect" and they returned to sharpness.

I'm an electric shaver so can't give any advice on this one. Good luck with your search. I got lucky a couple of months ago: I use a Philishave 9000 which is about 4 or 5 years old now. I have to change the shaving head every 2 or 3 years which costs about £50. I was in Boots in Bishopbriggs while my daughter was rummaging in the Nike shop and I saw they had two Philishave 9000's (full thing including cleaner, cleaner fluid etc etc) in the clearance corner. It was reduced from £299 to £60. I decided to take it because if nothing else it gave me another shaver head and when I took it to the till the price was reduced even more to £50. I asked if it was damaged in some way but was told they were having a store refit and anything they won't be restocking just gets marked down every day until it sells.

Since I went back to wet shaving about 5 years ago (For the bits of me that aren't covered in beard), I've been using Wilkinson Sword disposable 2 blade jobbies and they're great. Cost about £4 for a pack of 4 and that will do me a month easily. I only shave my neck for the majority of the time and just trim the rest with my clippers.
I have recently discovered a great way to prevent shaving rash, which I always suffered from on my neck - actually using aftershave after I've had a shave. I don't know whether it kills the bacteria in the pores and stops the rash happening, I just know I don't get a rash and the wife comments on how nice I smell. Not expensive stuff, either - I grab whatever is cheap and smells nice from B&M. I've found the Adidas aftershaves are very good for a fiver a bottle.

I've found a great alternative - grow a beard. Not a bushy one but once a week I go over it with the trimmer set on 4 (3 for the top lip area) and use the electric razor to do the lower chin/neck area that would be under a shirt collar. It's great and feels like it saves so much time every day.
The only downside is the increasing amount of silver it highlights!

I use the one blade thing when I bother or get irritated by the fungus growth. Apparently the blade will last for three to four months but at £15 now, so it should.

The only downside is the increasing amount of silver it highlights! I haven't got much grey in my hair but on holiday I let my beard grow in and it came in largely grey! What's that all about? Is the missus rubbing in a bit of Just For Men as I sleep?

I've had a beard for 3 years now and just shave around my cheek area a couple of times a week to look reasonably tidy and my neck when I can be bothered; once every week to 2 weeks, I've started the Harry's subscription thing on the lowest frequency possible as a blade can last me a month because I use them so infrequently; £20 worth of blades and shaving gel will probably last me 9 months to a year.
I detest shaving, I'm crap at it and I have very sensitive skin so it always flares up, also I just can't be arsed with shaving; it's a chore.

I've always used the Gillette shaving gel for sensitive skin and found a noticeable difference.

Actually the Harry's sensitive gel seems not too bad so far, I also find the time of day matters too, whenever I shave/shaved just before bed, I would have a raging rash in the morning, however if I shave during the day (usually my day off), I still get a bit of irritation but nothing like I would if I had slept on it.

I hate shaving too, but I do very day except sometimes on holiday. I get it done as soon as I'm out of bed, the longer I leave it the more I dislike it and the more sensitive my skin seems! This stuff is the most amazing after shave moisturiser, costs a fortune but lasts ages and it is the only one I have used that soothes skin even if I shave later in the day: www.spacenk.com/uk/en_GB/skincare/moisturisers/day-anytime/vitamin-e-face-moisturizer-MUK200006430.htmlI find all the "sensitive" stuff is better too, I used to use Mach 3 sensitive blades but they only lasted 4 days or so before the lube strip disintegrated and they noticeably scratched. Now I use Wilkinsons hydro 5 sensitive blades now. They are not cheap, and can bite a bit on first use, but they then last a good 2 weeks+ feeling great, by far the best shave I have had, used with Nivea sensitive shave gel or foam. I have tried the blade rotation thing too but it did not work for me.

There must be some blade issue somewhere. Currently there is a shortage in the club and members are asked to request a (disposable) razor from sports reception. I asked Brad (the almost ever-present sports manager) what had bought that on and was told it was to ensure on one per person was being taken. "WTF!" I exclaimed in full wording. "People here are stealing disposable fucking razors???". "Yes, people are taking 5 or 6 at a time." Dreadful behaviour which should lead to blackballing, in more than one sense of the word!
I use the Gillette 5-blade things if I shave at home, face or balls but different razor head either end.....

If I do wet shave, I use an old fashioned DE razor with disposable blade. It seems to cause much less irritation than a multi blade. My electric shaver is a wet electric though.

I wet-shave using one of those battery-powered Gilette Fusion razors that vibrates and King of Shaves antibacterial shaving gel. I only really need to shave every second morning and my facial hair growth is effectively restricted to a goatee (naff all has ever grown on the sides of my face), it's a pretty quick process and as such a blade easily lasts several months.
I've never liked proper electric razors. Just feels much cleaner and smoother with a wet shave.
My Fusion razor must be at least 15 years old, if not more - it still works and given that the blade is the key part, I've never seen any reason to change anything other than the blade and the occasional battery.

I use both electric and wet shaving as I'm fickle like that. But the electric shaver is a Philips wet or dry model that can be used with shaving foam, cream or just warm water or dry - but with some moisture it makes it far smoother and less irritating. For the wet days I use a Wilkinson Sword 5 blade jobby.
Whilst I could take the credit if I wanted to be ungracious, I don't think I suggested the rotation of blades approach for wet shaving. I though it was piers or bob?

I tried and I get dry, itchy skin and tried 2 different beard trimmers that would randomly just pluck hairs out, which was eye-wateringly painful. Plus I get a slightly ginger beard despite my (greying) brown hair.

Facial hair iritates me, quite literally. I have to use an electric razor as I am so short-sighted that if I use any sort of bladed thing, I end up cutting ,yself multiple times.
As I get older the facial hair is growing faster and getting stronger whereas I thought the growth would slow down as I aged. I really need to shave twice per day now (morning and evening) and sometimes ia third shave before I go to bed would be beneficial to cut down on the itchiness

Shave three times a day? That's nearly as often as you clean the car! I don't shave too often, once a week probably, but I use an electric job usually. They don't do as good a job as a blade because they always seem to miss bits, but I prefer the comfort and convenience. There are some eye-wateringly expensive ones out there, but I always buy myself one in the January sales. I bought a 300 quid shaver and a 250 quid toothbrush in Boots a couple of years back for £99 each. £250 for a TOOTHBRUSH?!?!?! I hope it was made of platinum for that money! 'Kin Hell .. .. ..

I'd been getting lazy of late and hadn't used a brush to apply soap (which I find works as well as the gels etc). It really does make a world of difference to how easily the blade cuts hair and slides over the skin. Must make myself spend that extra minute or so every time...
