Sold my road bike on eBay collection only.
Buyer pays immediately and wants to arrange courier - I'm not too amused and tell him the courier will need the collection barcode and it will have to be a mutually convenient time and date due to work.
I get a message this morning that the courier is coming tomorrow between 10am and 1pm which won't work because I won't be here.
I've cancelled the sale and refunded the buyer. He paid ebay via PayPal which rings more alarm bells that it's a scam and he could recover his money from me once he has the item.
Am I being too cautious?

No, that sounds like a scam, how much fuss did they kick up about cancelling?
If I was genuine it would be a lot, but then I'd communicate better over collection. Was it a known courier?

Haven't heard a thing. The courier was a WhatsApp from a Hungarian mobile number which is what made me cancel it.

Haven't heard a thing. The courier was a WhatsApp from a Hungarian mobile number which is what made me cancel it. I wasn’t sure if it was a scam, but now I am! I’ve not sold anything on eBay for a few years and when I did it was cash and collection only. It doesn’t feel like it’s worth the hassle most of the time. We’ve had to clear quite a few things (furniture and white goods) this year due to the new kitchen and extension, all of which was in really good condition, but I couldn’t face the hassle of selling it. We donated it all to the BHF, who collect from your house, are super grateful and let you know what’s been raised through the sale. No hassle dealing with general public and a warm feeling!

When we were in a similar situation we just stuck it on Gumtree and sold it all to people who called by and picked it up in person. Our garage was like Steptoe's Yard for while.

eBay, it seems, is becoming more hassle than it's worth. They take your eyes out on fees now too.
I don't have a Facebook account, so Gumtree may be the answer.

There's also freecycle if you just want rid of stuff for no money

I was selling an unwanted Samsung mobile and stuck it on Gumtree. A buyer asked if we could meet in the (as it was midweek) Blaydon Rugby Club Car Park and I agreed. Honestly, it was like a drugs deal - I drove into the car park and flashed my lights, he flashed his and we drove towards each other, meeting driver's side window to driver's side window. Money and phone was exchanged and we both drove off with barely a word.

Long time since I sold anything on eBay. I thought it was only really for traders these days. FB marketplace generally works but they have an unwritten rule that the first person to comment gets the item, which makes it rather annoying when that person doesn't respond to your messages to organise collection. Unless something is of particular decent value we just donate it to charity.

Unless something is of particular decent value we just donate it to charity. There does seem to be more traders than personal sellers on ebay these days it's true, but it can still be a source of fairly cheap items. However .. .. some scrote swiped the mirror cap from the drivers door of my car a few weeks ago, and the only type I could find on ebay weren't colour coded (black only), came from China and had those stupid winglets on them. No thanks. BMW wanted well over £80 for a primed one, so I ended up getting a painted on for about the same from a place in the Midlands somewhere.

Hard to say. I've used Ebay a lot, but not so much in the last few years, and never had an issue bar car tyres and wheels often being a lot worse than stated. It's great for self-assembly bike projects.
Paying outside Ebay is my main red flag. If you keep the payment and comms through Ebay, what can they do in this instance? If all the communications about the courier were outside of Ebay they could claim it was not received I suppose.
I'll be putting the Jag winter wheels/tyres on Ebay soon as the FB group didn't have any interest - I'll ensure payment is cash on collection or through Ebay, and that buyer arranges courier or collection - but unless its them in person, it has to be a proper courier... As long as all the messaging about that is via Ebay messages, its hard for them to later say they know nothing about said courier!

I've sold stuff via eBay but it is a bit hit and miss. If you're lucky and you are dealing with genuine people it's still a good way to sell. If you get a dickhead / scammer / dealer who wants to low-ball you it's a right pain.
I sold the Mini 18 inch wheels. The rules are clearly pay then collect. Top bidder turns out to be a wheel dealer who then says "I'll pay on collection, mate" (I hate the use of the word mate in written stuff, it instantly puts me on notice to expect the worst). He was clearly going to come and then try and knock the price down. I said no and cancelled the sale for "non payment". He went utterly beserk and threatened all sorts of ire on me. I messaged the number 2 bidder. Nice man, paid straight away, picked them up next day. Easy.

I've relisted it to start on Saturday afternoon.
I've offered postage with a specialist courier chargable at the relevant rates - works out about £100 just for postage and packing - about £50 for the box and the same for shipping with a bike courier.
I've also stated that I won't accept 3rd party couriers and such sales will be cancelled and that cash on collection is preferred.
Let's see what happens.
