... but not involving cars. This was on train, so I suppose could be classed as public transport, bur rather better than anything that would normally pull into your local station. On Saturday we spent the day on The Northern Belle train, in a route from Telford, up through Cheshire and Cumbria, then back down the Cumbrian coast. Hauled most of the way by a steam locomotive, the train provides a level of luxury which would rival the best in the world, including the Orient Express. It was like a step back in time and I could live out my Bertie Wooster fantasy lifestyle, with Champagne, caviar and fine dining while we chuffed at speed through the English countryside. During a stop at Penrith Station I climbed up onto the footplate for a look around the business end of the train. There were two of them shovelling coal non-stop as we chuffed up the line to Shap. I have found some videos online from the many trackside spotters we saw along the way.

Looks great. I know exactly what you mean by the "step back in time" comment. It's like that when you visit the Severn Valley Railway. It is like entering another world as you step onto the platform. Wonderful.
That viaduct in the video looks like the one over to Arnside. We were up there a couple of weeks ago visitng friends.

That looks amazing! Steam trains are wonderful things, even for someone that didn't grow up with them being the norm...
I always like the look of the train journeys across Canada in the glass topped trains - maybe in retirement!

A fantastic day out. My parents have done that journey a few times, my Dad loves steam trains and my Mum likes a bit of luxury so they’re both happy.

Looks fabulous James!
We did the 'Harry Potter' train a few years ago, though the weather conspired against us for pretty much the whole weekend we were in Fort William .. . but Mallaig was solid downpour the whole time we were there, except the last half an hour! Still loved the the whole trip though.
Been on one or two small lines since, and enjoyed them all. Not too many up this neck of the woods though.

I always like the look of the train journeys across Canada in the glass topped trains - maybe in retirement! Have you seen any of Michael Portillo's TV programmes? I'd also love to take the Rocky Mountaineer across Canada but somehow I think lack of funds and lack of time will prevent it. It's definitely on my Bucket List though

My Dad's gotten himself into steam trains in retirement down on the Swanage Railway. Started off as a porter and now works the Corfe Castle signal box where he operates a token system for the single track line down to Swanage. Keeps him out of trouble at least.

Looks great. Loving the whistle and flute. Thanks. A Walker Slater suit, in a fine Borders Tweed.
I feel this has the makings of an ITV Sunday evening drama about a retired Met detective who travels the UK on a vintage steam train, solving railway related crimes as he dines in style passing through the English countryside.

My eldest sister has just come back from an 18 day railway tour across the USA. Started in San Francisco and ended in New York. Was suitably spectacular.
