Firstly, insurance. I wasn't too shocked when I went to renew my Evoque insurance and found that the price has rocketed up from £338 or so to £535 as it seems to rocket up every year but I was shocked to find I couldn't get a better deal by switching companies on one of the usual comparison sites as usually I can and usually the cost only goes up a few £ if at all, but not this year. Googling tells me that prices have gone up by as much as 90%. Phoning the AA got my car insurance quote down from £535 to £440.64. How's it going for you guys? Secondly, it's time to renew my breakdown cover too. The AA want £50 more than last years but the RAC quoted a bit less saving me £20. I then went to a comparison site and can't believe what I'm seeing as instead of the AA's £163.58 quotes start with a load of companies quoting £32 odd, for eg pinginsure, dynamo, nova, etc and even the RAC are quoting £100 whilst they quoted £145.75 to me. Are these quotes too good to be true and assuming they don't use AA or RAC do they use a local company? Are these worth using? Thanks for any tales of woe or whatever

insurance on both my cars was up, the Boxster by quite a lot even though that was going from one to two year's NCD (my "full" NCD is on the Jag). Comparison sites offered not much of a saving so I left it. ISTR it was a circa 50% increase.
Renewing car tax on both car for £695 each, a couple of months apart, was more of a shocker - I had not taken in that it had changed.
Servicing is well up as well - my last two XFR annual services have been £588 and £688, for a long time before that they were circa £350-£450. Nothing happens apart from an oil and filter change. It's a fairly big increase and no suprise as dealerhsips are really struggling to find staff, and presumably having to pay them more.

I've just insured the Range Rover at £600. That was up £100 from a couple of weeks ago when I did a quick quote - I did do the original quote on a Vogue SE rather than the Autobiography though.
I've managed to avoid increases on the pickup which was February and I can't remember when the Mazda is due, but that is always peanuts.

It’s a complete piss take. Insurance companies are profiteering on the back the cost of living excuse. Needs investigation.

I've just renewed the lotus today - it too had increase from £142 to £149 - so I guess I can live with that! But I'm holding my breath to see what the Porsches insurance renewal will be

I ran that as a company car. I sold it and bought a new Elise. I only kept that 18 months/2 years or so as although it was great to drive when road conditions were good it was a nightmare when the were not plus every time I took it out something broke or fell off it and that did get tiresome. I still have a soft spot for Lotus but I think they've moved waaaaay out of my price range.

As above in the OP.
Does anyone have an opinion on these £35 breakdown cover options?
The RAC are comping out a bit cheaper than the AA at the mo so I'll possibly go with them or just stay with the AA for lack of hassle but i just wondered about these really cheap deals.

It’s a complete piss take. Insurance companies are profiteering on the back the cost of living excuse. Needs investigation. Googling tells me it's all perfectly understandable, insurance was too cheap in the past and no one is getting rich out of this. Maybe these claims needs to be fact checked

PS.
Interesting to note that some breakdown companies wont cover my 2001 MX5. 10 year old being the limit. The swines. I'll have to be careful and make sure whatever I get covers that.
I haven't broken down and needed recovery since I had the Elan and that was when I was in computers so it's 25+ years ago. The problem with the Elan was the gear linkage cables kept snapping stopping me from getting the gears which required the stick to be pushed forward. It happened three or four times until they brought out a mod which cured it and it never happened again.

I'm with Start Rescue. The times I have had to used them, they have been fine and sent a local agent within an hour.
They cover our 07 MX-5, did cover my 2000 Discovery and have just added the Range Rover no problem. Total renewal for the two cars is £116.
They won't cover the pickup so I use LV Britannia Rescue for that which is £70 for the year including European cover.

I’m with ford assist - it used to be free if you got your car serviced at a ford dealer. I think it’s £20 a year now With Tara’s rav4 and my mums wheelchair car , we just go here www.moneysupermarket.com/breakdown-cover/Put in what cover you want , and go with the cheapest one that has defaqto 5* . Don’t be put off if you haven’t heard of the firm either - My SIL got towed home from near Middlesbrough to the midlands once so they do what they say they will, and much cheaper than the AA/RAC

I switched breakdown cover from RAC to RescueMyCar about 18 months ago after two dreadful experiences in our family. ABout 20 years as RAC family members and twice they left lone females alone in the dark for 4 hours before attending (wife and younger daughter). Impossible to lodge a serious complaint by email or phone, even if you call and ask for a Director by name your call is routed to "customer services" who of course do not offer any service at all.
My most recent car insurance renewal was on the Fiesta at the end of June, a very small increase of a few pounds which included the return of my wife as an additional driver. I'd read stories of big increases, so I was plesantly surprised; it's a little pricey as it is insured through a broker rather than online

There is an argument that with the AA they might try and get you going as their vans have tools and you get an actual mechanic but that's only if you breakdown during the day. Otherwise them and the RAC sub out your recovery to a local firm who won't even look at your car they will literally just recover you. You also need to check what sort of recovery option the quote gives. You don't want one that dumps you at the nearest garage with no onward travel options.

I've got breakdown cover with Green Flag. Been with them for 10 years, never used it so far but this year the premium dropped by a couple of quid to about £61.
I'll need to add european cover to that now though, should I just add it to the existing policy or take out a specific one? I remember that my brother in law paid around £200 for a year's european cover back in 2019.

Breakdown cover for the Golf is with the RAC via my current account.
Insurance never makes sense. I was running a couple of cars through the comparison sites last night and the prices were a lot higher than similar cars I’d looked at a couple of months ago, between 50-100% increase). I re-ran mine out of interest and the best price was £1,800….I paid £880 a couple of months ago!
The other strange thing is NCD. The quote I had for zero NCD assuming it would be a 3rd car, came out at 10% cheaper than the one with 10 years. Probably because I didn’t tick the ‘protect NCD’ box, so a saving there, but still a surprise.

Thanks all.
I have a few days to think about things so I'll do that and probably buy insurance and breakdown cover at the weekend or next week. I'll probably stick with the AA for insurance and either them or the RAC for breakdown cover too. Those £35 breakdown cover deals do look interesting but I suppose you get what you pay for and the AA/RAC may be the more sensible choice.

I also have an Elan SE which has a short shift kit on top of improved cables, so a great gear change I had a couple more problems with mine. I had a hole in the floor and a dash mount broke and the dash fell about an inch on the drivers side. the dealership (the one on the Felling bypass which was a V'hall / Lotus garage) were no help and just told me to find a boat repairer. A more annoying problem was that the windows went slack and when I shut the door they'd bow out which meant wind noise and in the rain it just poured in. When parking up I had to push each window in so that it bedded nicely into the surround rather than bow out in front of it. This was another issue the V'hall garage had no interest in fixing. I did enjoy that Elan though and it only went because of the mounting issues which the dealership didn't seem interested in fixing and the mileage and of course the Elise caught my eye. I bought my Elise from them on the Felling bypass too but thankfully they lost the Lotus franchise and it moved to another place in Newcastle. F1 something or other?

We always insured the Shogun with NFU as they did the livestock trailer assist as an add on. So they recover you, the car, the trailer and the livestock if you need it. Moving from the Shogun to the Discovery Sport was an absolute shocker insurance wise. After trawling round comparison sites and making phone calls, we ended up back with NFU but at a 75% increase in premium. The horse lorry is also with NFU and also includes livestock assist. But is 50% of what the Discovery costs to insure.
The Mini is with Privilege and the premium hardly went up at all this year. Go figure...
Recovery and insurance (and road robbery tax) are three of those "I hate paying this but I know I need to" things. The Jag was covered by the RAC and the one time we needed to be recovered (water pump failure) by the time we got picked up the Jag dealer was closed. So we had to get recovered to home and then had to pay to be recovered to the Jag dealer the next day. Pissed me off no end.

I've been lucky with breakdowns. My company Sierra gave endless trouble but never actually stranded me anywhere other than at home and although my company Montego died in the rain once I was only ten minutes walk from home so that's where I went to phone for recovery. I walked back to the car and it started first time and never did that again so I drove home and cancelled the recovery.
My Elan SE did strand me once when the gear change cable snapped and I waited over 4 hours for recovery. After that whenever the cable snapped I drove it on the unaffected gears. The only other time I needed recovery was when My Elan SE was rear ended by a girl in a Golf and the car wouldn't start again. The impact was quite heavy and the car crumpled to mid rear wheel arch and the spare was forced through the boot wall into the car but the main reason it wouldn't start was I learned later that the impact had triggered a crash detector switch and that switched and killed everything. At the time I didn't know the switch existed and where it was but I don't suppose the car would have been driveable even if it had started. They came quite quick that day.
These days I don't tend to go far but I suppose it's better safe than sorry.

Got a puncture in Dudley last week, pumped the tyre back up and proceeded on to Sheffield. It started losing air faster so I used the can of gunk you get from BMW to try and seal it. That didn't work as by now the gunk and air were pissing out of the tyre. The car phoned BMW rescue and they came out and plugged it so I could get home on Thursday. It needed new tyres anyway so on Sat morning ATS came out and fitted 4 new Bridgestones (245/50 R19s) on the drive for £511 all in, courtesy of Blackcircles - which I didn't think was too bad.
