Seems that VW run a tourbus lasting about an hour (with English commentary) through the Wolfsburg factory. There is also a nearby Auto City with museum-type buildings/exhibits for each of their major marques - VW, SEAT, Skoda, Audi, Porsche.
Has anyone visited or know someone who has? Worth planning for next year or not? Apart from the above (and the VW currywurst), it seems that there is little else on offer in Wolfsburg itself as it's mainly "Volkswagen city"

Not Wolfsburg, but my brother had a tour of the VW 'Transparent Factory' in Dresden when they were building the Phaeton there. Said it was very good.
I have been around a few car factories in this country have enjoyed it. Once did Jaguar Castle Bromwich and Morgan is close succession. Chalk and cheese.

The factory tour itself is alright but it's mostly just like any other car factory tour (the car 'vending machine' is interesting though). Autostadt (the large theme park for all the other brands) is much more fascinating, with lots to see and do. Down the road though is the Volkswagen AutoMuseum. If you can blag a visit to that one, I highly recommend it. www.automuseum-volkswagen.de/

I've not done VW, but I have done a tour of Ford's plant in Dagenham back when I was at Uni. Pretty sure they were building Fiestas. I also toured the Quantum kit car factory around the same time, as we were building one of their cars out of a Fiesta we had been gifted by Ford.

I did a tour of Longbridge in the dying days of Rover. The Streetwise had just been announced and the first time I’d seen one was it rolled down the production line. The guide was keen to explain how impressive it was that a rear drive 75 (V8) and front drive 75 could pass along the same line.

I visited Dagenham when the Fiesta was being produced, it was a during a couple of day assessment centre for one of their development programmes, so must have been around 1991-2. I got into the final few (6 iirc) only for them to subsequently decide they weren’t taking anyone on that year. I’ve also visited the Honda Swindon factory and in my teens I had a couple of Bentley factory tours, as our next door neighbour was production director.

I went round Ford Dagenham in 1972 on a school trip. That was back when they had a foundry as well and metal went in one end and cars came out the other. Was fascinating, but I also remember how filthy and dirty everything was - even the production lines.
Rather different to going round Toyota's engine factory on Deeside about 10 years ago - everything was spotless, even the foundry.

I've been to a few car factories myself, but the one that stuck with me the most was Maserati in Modena. It's as clean and modern as any, but the workers all stopped work to greet the visiting press pack (us) the moment we stepped in, whereas at other facilities they carried on working uninterrupted.
Make of that what you will.

I'm currently at Wolfsburg train station waiting to return to Berlin. I took a chance and got lucky with a factory tour. Very interesting visit to the massive VW site
