Can there possibly be any more rain left up there? It was hosing it down all the way back up the M40 from Heathrow last night, all through the night and still is now. Roads now closing everywhere and local schools closing while everyone can still get home. This is the escape route from town out to the villages normally: and the latest is this...

Scary. I hope the bridge is closed? It is now. Herself is heading home now, but is having to take a massive detour since the usual route to here from Stratford is impassable. Some farmers I know have given up on completing their autumn drilling and have packed away their seed drills. Look out for a massive planting of spring cereals next year.

... and there has been heavy snowfall in parts of Wales, but in North Surrey it's still comparatively mild and we've not had that much rain.
I think we have got away lightly, I dread to think how those who have been flooded will cope over the coming weeks.

We had a lot of rain a couple of weeks ago - several roads were closed on the Monday night. It's been calm since then and the last few days have been crisply cold and sunny. The car said it was -3C this morning though.

We’ve been let off pretty lightly so far. Heavier rain this morning, the main dual carriageway past Northampton was closed this morning, but nothing like some of the flooding I saw through Oxfordshire yesterday. A colleague has just shown me his brothers best friends (Yorkshire farmer) nearly new RR Sport which only had about a foot sticking up out of the water. The ‘after’ picture with water pouring out of the open door and the amount of mud and leaves everywhere was pretty bad.

It is obviously bloody terrible for those caught by this but as for those who expected Boris to be there directing crews and relief efforts, I wonder what they have been on. How on earth is the pm being there going to improve things?

Exactly. He’ll just slow everything down. Cost me quite a bit last week tidying up then stopping the freezer operation for 4 hours to accommodate his visit. Well, it’s an open book contract so the customer paid and they got some publicity, but that’s quickly forgotten when you’re overspent for the week.

Short term they need to dredge these rivers and then get some proper defences built over the next couple of years. There may not be many people (in real terms) impacted by these floods but the effect is devastating and they deserve to have their properties protected just as much as someone living in or near a large city which is where most of the money goes.

It's been utterly dismal all day today. There's one or two local spots that get occasional very localised flooding on some of the rural roads but thankfully we don't see significant flooding in our part of the county.

Who will buy that stone house now? If I had £1.2m to spend, I don't think it would go on a house where I might get my feet wet.

Well, check out a lot of the people who bought their council homes in London, many of the homes bought for between 13 and 17k now have values in the millions. Serious wedges of cash for something that sold for very little. The house I grew up in in Battersea which did not sell for £1500 back in 1984 is now worth more than £3m.......

And that's exactly the kind of thing that perpetuates the North South divide. In Glasgow the same council house purchased for £15K may now be worth £100K - £120K if you're lucky. Location and central Government's obsession with keeping everything in the SE has made millionaires out of some in what could easily be considered an unfair manner. For the unity of the country things have to be spread out more.

Sounded completely mad, so did a quick search on ex local authority houses and the first one that popped up was a 3 bed mid terrace with garage in Battersea for £675,000. Still completely mad in my mind, but the one you grew up in must be very different to the standard offering.

The house in Battersea is not and never was a council house, sorry I should have mentioned but last time I saw one of the properties in that road a year or so ago it was up for £3m something. Several of the houses on the estate in Roehampton did sell in the region of £3m.
Looking around, prices seem to have dropped, one of the properties on the close is listed at a value of £1.9m which is quite some change.

London house prices have drifted down over the last 18 months. So they are now just totally utterly bonkers as opposed to totally and completely utterly bonkers.

We drove up to Utttoxeter and back yesterday. It rained all day and the roads were awash in some places but none closed. In the dark I drove back at 50-ish on NSL roads as visibility was terrible plus I didn't want to suddenly crash into a flood or huge patch of water. This clearly upset the pillock behind me who proceeded to drive far too near my bumper a lot of the way.

Considering that the council houses (4 beds) with the south circular and Barnes station etc for London connection, were being sold originall for such daft money they are still happy enough. Zoopla are lying about them though. They claim a property on the close I know for a fact is a tight 4 bed property is listed as having 5 beds and 2 bathrooms. I know it is 4 and 1 because my aunt used to live there.

I know it is 4 and 1 because my aunt used to live there. All the houses round my way were 3 bed, 2 receptions, one bath when I grew up. Ours is now 4 bed, 3 reception, 3 bath and 1.5 width garage - and we haven't had the roof done. Most are 4-5 beds now and if you found an un-extended one to buy the owners are over 65 and have lived there for 30+ years. As soon as they move out (or die) the builders move in and gut the house, rip the roof off, build on the back etc. etc. Cars are the other difference: not every house had one car in the '70s round here: now there's several per house.

There is no room to change the layout anywhere, no extension possible. The estate was built on an outdoor swimming pool without removing the pool, they just chucked rubble into the pool and built over it with the result that there have been more than a few problems with subsidence.
Being stacked maisonettes there is little room for mucking around with the layout either.
