Question to any regular users of the M6 up near Warrington.
Travelling North, you eventually come out of almost 30 miles worth of 50 limit roadworks into what looks like a completed section of managed motorway, however, the gantries appear to be set to 60mph regardless of weather and traffic and there are no cameras mounted on the gantries. What there are though are the very same average speed cameras used in the 50mph sections that are staggered between the gantries that now read 60mph.
Few things fire up the urine kettle like a needless speed restriction on 4 lanes worth of roadwork free newness - so what's the deal ?, is this section being " patrolled " by the average speed cameras, but with the trigger set to 60 mph rather than 50 mph ?.

I travel up that stretch every week. Until just before Christmas it was 50mph and the roadworks were in place, they increased it to help with ‘holiday traffic’. I’m pretty sure the average cameras aren’t operating, it’s just the cameras by the electronic signs, but I’m not 100% sure so cruise up there at an indicated 65mph which feels quite quick after spending most of the time from south of Coventry at 50mph. Agree that it’s a annoying as it’s a nice wide well surfaced stretch of Motorway, but it’s better that it was before. I don’t think they’ll change it until the whole section before is complete.

No , it has just been resurfaced lanes 1,3,4 and 2 is untouched where barriers were with ex cats eye craters. I wouldn't have signed the job off!!

I’m sure there was a section of the M1, around Sheffield I believe, where the UK has been in breach of EU pollution limits and so the new smart motorway was going to be used to bring pollution down by reducing traffic to 60mph. Perhaps they’re doing the same. The section around Warrington intersects with the M56 and M62 so must be one of the busiest sections of motorway away from the M25 so it wouldn’t supprise me if similarly high pollution levels were being recorded there.

Had the same issue with the M3 smart motorway - after years of over-running roadworks including the "widening" to 4 lanes, once it was all finished and almost billiard-table smooth, the limit was set to 50mph for a further extended period so that they could test the speed cameras out ! I really am surprised that there hasn't been a popular revolution by the people against the successive governments that we have had over the past few decades; we seem to tolerate a lot of stupidity and incompetence from our s-called leadesr

Thanks Martin
That’s very sneaky of “ The Man “, as I cannot recall there being any signs indicating that the average speed cameras are still in force.
I can’t wait until the entire motorway network is “ smart “
Said no one, ever.

I haven’t either, which makes me think it’s just the cameras on the variable limit signs that are in operation, but I don’t want to risk it.

Won't there be some generic speed camera signs, so they can say, "well we did put sgns up to warn you..."?

Normally if they’re not operating them they have a sign below them that says ‘camera not in use’. So if you don’t see one I’d go on the assumption that they are indeed operational.

I hate that section of the M6. Any time something goes tits up, IE every sodding day, my town gets gridlocked.
