Suddenly, our military does not seem so bad, despite the aircraftless carriers.

Unfortunately, it just gives ammunition to Trump that he was right to point out Europe, and the Germans in particular, are not spending enough on defense and hiding behind the coat tails of the US.
That said, if you're Polish, would you be comfortable with a stronger German military - we all know how enthusiastic they get once they get a few tanks together and start going on extended trips abroad?

Yes, the problem there was the extremely fine sand clogging the air filtration system on the Challengers. A guy I know at BAE Systems on the Tyne were working flat out to provide spares and upgrades. Was ever thus though with all conflicts. On the plus side the built in water boilers built into every British armoured fighting vehicle never once failed and provided a constant supply of brew to the lads while they were waiting for the AA.

On defence Trump is right. Which is a real shock to a lot of people who therefore refuse, as it is Trump, to believe him. NATO, at the level of spending that most NATO members have, without huge US support, could not stop the Russians rolling across the European plains if they chose to. Unless they laid waste to whole areas with nuclear weapons that only the UK and France possess. And France does not spend 2% on defence (spending 1.8%) and has said that it will take until 2024 to reach the 2% target.

To be fair we don't spend 2% either. We fudge the figures to include pensions paid to ex-service personnel. It's within the rules but a Dad's Army of pensioners isn't going to roll back the Russians either.
I passed the new HMS Prince of Wales aircraft carrier the other day and it's look good. I hope we don't do something stupid like sell it to the French or another third party at a knockdown price like HMS Ocean (£80 million to the Brazilians FFS).
