That rear bumper is, indeed, an utter mess. In fact the whole rear end is a mess.
And the front grille is way, way too big.
How has BMW car design managed to get from the original 8 series - which was and still is a thing of beauty - to this eyesore without anybody going "hang on a minute....". OK, one can argue that pop up headlights and low fronts had to go due to pedestrian impact rules, but even so, there's no excuse for the required result to look like this.

The grille wasn’t quite as big as I expected, but I agree that it’s too big and the rear end is a mess. Such a shame as I think it looks really good from the front/side, very modern with some interesting shapes.

I may be in a minority of 1 here when I say that by modern styling standards, the rear doesn't look too bad at all to me.
(However, the less said about the front end, the better)
I see it's going to be powered by a 4.4L V8......... :-)

What is it that this car is going to do that the 6 coupe doesn't? I think it is replacing the 6 coupe. So not very much is probably the answer. Well, except be a lot more expensive perhaps?

In fact when you think about it, the side view of a lot of current cars is OK (things like the Cullinan excepted of course...). It is the front and back that knackers most designs these days.

This exactly. Upwards of £20K more than the equivalent 6 series in a very similar and slightly smaller car (about 2 inches shorter)

Not all that plus I can’t see the point. What hole in the range is this filling?

I like that, but I can’t help thinking I’d save a lot of money by buying a Mustang and sticking some BMW bits on the front - I doubt anyone would even notice!

I don't think it's as bad as all that. The one in this week's Autocar is a dark blue and that works much better than Chav White.

It's tested in the latest issue of CAR. Haven't read the detail but it finishes last against the Bentley Conti (£200k as tested) Aston DB11 (£210k as tested) and Lexus coupe thing (£90k as tested).
It does look good though.

Only one of those sounds like a realistic competitor!

I agree. The opening comments in the article imply that they've got the Bentley & Aston there to see how the BMW comapres to things that are similar in concept but the next level up (in price).
I haven't got any further than that though.

Saw one up close at Dan G's car fing on Sunday. It doesn't really look any better in real life... Yes, I saw one somewhere the other day and agree that I don't quite like it.
It has a number of design features that irk, but one key one is that the door handle is mounted too high, which makes it look fat.

There was a new shape Continental there, too. Also very ugly. The chromed chicken wire grille was particularly horrible. Are you sure it wasn't a Chrysler 300C?

I'm no great fan either. I thought the 6 series was a beautiful car in both coupe and Grand Coupe although how they manage to package such little space inside a coupe of that length baffles me.
The roof on the 8 coupe slopes down too early at the back for my eyes and has a strange pinching look above the rear wheel arches.
