I prefer the Benz as well - sound quality, looks, interior.

The wafty ride would have me in the Benz every time over the BMW. I watched the Autocar video and they said the M5 was more comfortable than the E63S, made quite a point about it being the opposite to what you’d expect. Plus the performance seats are supposed to be pretty uncomfortable after a relatively short time. I think a standard E63 on the smaller wheels would be the optimum spec, it’s just a shame it has the vinyl dash, the S gets a Nappa leather one. I think I’d have the E63 as well. You can get £10k off list and there are plenty of 6 month old ones around for £70-75k which makes it a lot cheaper than an M5 for now. The cheapest I’ve seen is a 6 month old saloon for £65k which has only done 900 miles.

I wouldn't say the one I drove had a wafty ride at all but for the type of car it was quite acceptable. Ballistic quick!

I can’t stand the dashboard in the current E-class. It would stop me buying one.

and a metric fuck ton of power. 4wd or not - anything that can do 60 to 100mph in 4.2 seconds is silly quick. I think 0 to 150 mph was recorded as 17.8 seconds - which is equally mental. You’d have to be pretty careful with your right foot on the motorway. Going from 60mph into triple figures like that could be very easy to do without realising it as it probably feels the way a 520d does going from 60-70!

Imagine how fast it'll be when the tuners get their hands on it. Litchfield can give the RS6 a mild tweak and make it do 0-100 in under 7 secs.

The serious collector I know had an rs6 as his daily and he got it tuned to 750bhp. A car I have come close to buying many times ,but never got out of one thinking ‘what that needs is more power’

I'd made this comment elsewhere - I noticed from the Autodar review that the new M5 has synthesised engine noise in the cabin. WT actual F? Yes, it's got fake engine noise inside the car. Has the world ended or something and I've not noticed? Is the engine note really that awful on its own?

Turbo V8s do not sound as nice as their NA counterparts - turbos sap a lot of noise from the exhaust.

Agreed but a nice sports exhaust will sort that on most cars.

turbos sap a lot of noise from the exhaust. Tell that to most of the Imprezas I see (and hear) with the catering size baked bean tins hanging under the rear bumper.

That's because they have aftermarket exhausts. Standard Scoobies are pretty quiet.

Friend of mine has done the Litchfield thing to his RS6.
Sadly, I’ve not seen or heard it, but it is supposed to be awesome.

I watched the Autocar video at the weekend, and I'd have the E63 as well, which I would never have said of the old (Taxiiiiiiiiiii!) one. It looks good outside, the interior is lovely, and it sounds pretty good for a turbo too!
Haven't the prices risen on these things though? The E63 is pushing £100k optioned up, some variants start over that. Leases on a 3+63/15k miles are £1500 odd per month. Exactly 3 years ago the old E63 and C63 could be had on the same lease option for well under £800 a month. Now a C43 is nearly that. They are sure as hell not going to be creeping into my (say £30k) budget at 4-5 years old like the old ones. Shame.
Stupid comments on the video about the leases too, being "a grand a month after you've chopped your old car in for £30k". If the old car was on a lease where is the £20k coming? I still wonder how many people do that once then get a much cheaper car next time as they have no capital to put into the "deposit" - which should be called the "immediate throwaway".

I wouldn’t bet on it being out of your budget. Both the new M5 and E63 have a sub £30k GFV after 4 years, around £25k at 20,000 miles a year. The E63 makes more sense at 6 months old and £70-75k, as its around £1000 a month (plus interest)

Yup, it doesn't appear to matter how high they push the list prices the cars always fall to a similar price at 3-4 years old.

A few years ago new XFR's were £65k and a good discount could be had (and some serious man maths could have nearly persuaded me that a new one made sense....). And I'd always thought that M5's were about the same - although maybe I was wrong on that?

Remember that the £ has fallen by over 20% against the Euro so what was a £60K car could easily be a £72K one now just through exchange rate differences.
However bargains still to be had. I got a flier on a new 4 series - up to 25% off list and 0% finance. Supply and demand still has power!
