Plus there is budget constraints and compromise which I don't have when choosing my car Oh not to have a budget constraint! With a 16 year old son that has now overtaken me in height (I’m 6’2 and a bit...) and a 12 year old catching up fast, rear legroom is the biggest constraint when choosing a main / family car. Closely followed by the desire to maintain the current holiday budget! I meant I don't need to compromise on my car there in terms of practicality. There are obviously still budget constraints as last time I looked I don't have a 720s on my driveway

Were you wearing your "I love my BMW" T shirt as you wrote that? Sorry? I'm normally accused of a love for all things Lexus (who also benchmarked their IS against the 3 Series). What did I say that wasn't true? Sure you haven't got them Volvo moonboots on? I have 2 pairs!

Are they really comfy, like a pair of slightly worn slippers? They'll certainly have a nice, soft, comfy sole unlike the BMW ones which have a hard, inflexible sole that works best on smooth surfaces.

I've got one It's a possibility though, I've started looking at diesels again so a nice 535 estate could fit the bill!

I have bought many cars without a test drive, usually because it is impossible to drive one when they haven't been released. The only one I regret was the bmw M6 . But for cars that are readily available to buy there is no reason not to test drive, and now dealers will give you the car for a day or even a week if you are serious.

You'll need to clock it and change the colour of the leather..

Nothing wrong with Black Leather, especially with ‘Exclusive Stitching’....! Its only just run in at 93k miles, especially as a very high % of those miles are decent length journeys, but you might want to tuck some money away for a couple of turbos just in case.

Don't buy my work colleague's 5. He's chopping it in for a Ford after having no end of trouble with it. Just in the last few months he's had the rear brakes seize on, the rear suspension collopse and the clutch warning light come on, even though he reckons it's not slipping. Definitely built on a Friday afternoon.

I really REALLY want the voodoo lights though! Despite it being nearly 10 years old now, there is very little about it I would change. Other than the fuel consumption and stereo UI, the only thing really would be the headlights, which are truly atrocious for a (relatively) modern car - if it were possible to transplant BMW voodoo lights onto mine, I'd do it in a heartbeat!

I think HID lights do age. I can’t say I ever found the Legacy’s lights lacking. Maybe try a pair of new HID bulbs.

For me, they've never seemed exactly brilliant, and I have wondered if it was as much my eyes ageing as the bulbs/lights themselves! If I do go down that road, I might swap the sidelights for something a bit brighter too.
