This should maybe be in rants. We've had a couple of threads recently on the latest Audis - is the exterior too chavvy, are the interiors not the same as of old and so on. Yet the cars sell and get rave reviews in general. Personally, I suspect that even if Audi smeared the interior of the press car with excrement, the interiors would get rave comments. After all, it would be German engineered excrement.. So I nearly choked when I read this in the Audi Q3 review on Autocar online and then read the following about the updated Lexus NX300h interior. Audi first - And now the Lexus - So the Lexus screen "sits awkwardly atop the dash". And yet the Q3 screen does not even merit a mention. The cabin is a "fine-tuned aesthetic". What's the emoticon for <shakes head in utter disbelief>?

Hmmm. Lexus cabin looks to shit all over the Audi one, to use your excrement-based theme

Maybe they really were mesmerised by the glow of the indirect lighting?
That Q3 looks awful. So much not to like, the screen is small and in a strange location, air con controls look basic, buttons dotted around, dated looking dials etc etc.
The Lexus IS a bit of a mess, but at least it looks fairly modern and it’s a lot nicer than the Audi. Open cup holders are a big no no.

This kind of reporting has been an irritant for me for a long time. If you read the long term reviews in something like CAR then some will be commented on for their poor fuel economy but you can almost guarantee that a German car that performs similarly poorly (or worse) in the same issue won't be worthy of a comment at all. In fact I'm sure they've managed that trick in their group tests as well.
As for the screen thing I was browsing used 5 Series earlier and was pleased to see that the previous gen version has the satnav/iDrive screen integrated whereas the new one has it 'stuck awkwardly atop the dash'!

The real low point on that Audi is the radio. How have they managed to make it look like it’s been lifted from a previous gen Seat Ibiza and not be bought to task for it. It just looks awful. And why are they even bothering to comment about the screen. It’s in the same position as it is in every car these days.
But of course this is a pointless thread because the Audi will sell like hot cakes regardless of what it’s interior looks like.

I've not been in a Q3 but I have been in an NX quite recently. It's very high on perceived material quality (for the most part) and fit and finish, but the design is definitely a bit hit-and-miss. The steering wheel in particular, which is the focus of your attention, is just somehow ever so slightly low-rent in terms of design.

“Copious switchgear” To be fair to Lexus the Japanese love lots of buttons: I have that radio ! Was gutted a few years back when the battery cover broke and I have resorted to some long tywraps to try to hold it in place. Not a fan of either the Audi or Lexus dashboards. Give me the button-laden Sony infotainment system from the Fiesta and C-Max over the touchscreen interface of the Kuga any day of the week.

Those are not good examples IMHO. The Q3 probably has the worst interior of any current Audi, and that Lexus just looks a bit odd (although the material finish is usually nice).
Their saloon equivalents are much better to be fair.
