Tested on a dry day I can understand that many might think that 4WD is superfluous but if you drive a powerful 4WD car regularly in the wet you suddenly realise how less stressful it is with quicker and safer progress. It has the added advantage that when some ar*ehole fixes himself to your bumper in the wet, he can be humbled very easily and safely in a matter of a few corners - they tend to go away or keep a decent distance after that.
In the recent snow our local Kwik-Fit boys had their Golf R out doing full bore acceleration runs with impressive levels of grip and minimum wheelspin - possibly shod with 4 winter tyres they way it went!

Indeed, in wet conditions, the Legacy was a great car. Loads of grip and very confidence inspiring.

Just popped up on an e-mail from Drive the Deal - Golf R 5door DSG at £28,995

That’s about right. I can just squeeze under the £40k list with a spec I’d be happy with, which means the net cost is about £36k.

Blimey, how many options are you adding?! That's about 6 grand under the OTRP, is it not? I specced one up at full price and it came to just under £39K. That was a DSG with metallic paint, DCC, silver Pretorias and Dynaudio upgrade. I take it you want the £3K farty pipework?

No, I definitely don’t want the exhaust! Memory seats are the big expense, as they can only be had with leather seats. I’d also go for Dynaudio, 19s, DCC, voodoo lights and I think I could squeeze in keyless entry as well and still keep it under £40k.
I thought I’d done pretty well!

Didn't see a voodoo light option? I had the standard black leather, too, but forgot to put it down above. And the black mirrors for less bling.
Mine came to £38,930 starting from the RRP of around £34K+, so a starting price of £29K should see my ideal spec at around £35K all in. Bit of a bargain given the performance. Will have to see what happens on the job front, but I wanna give up what I do currently for something new.
Only other worry of course is that Golf Rs are toerag magnets...

Having had two latest-generation Golfs as hire cars lately, I'm not sure I'd want to spend £30k on 2.0 one, however gussied-up and quick. It's just not special enough when you don't have the space to stretch it.

Actually scrap that. I am very sure I wouldn't.

It’s included in “Lane assist with dynamic light assist and traffic sign recognition”. Lane assist plus gives you all that plus traffic jam assist (keeps up with the flow of stop/start or slow traffic, inc steering to keep in lane) and a couple of other systems including one which will stop the car if you’re going to reverse into something.

It's just not special enough when you don't have the space to stretch it. I thought the same having also had both a Golf and Jetta hire car recently. The seats make a huge difference to the feel inside (as well as the driving position), as do leather seats and the digital dash. It really surprised me and there didn’t feel like much of a gap to the M140i/4GC we looked at pretty much straight afterwards, nor the S3 a little later on. Struggling to justify the cost based on the interior / quality is often the issue when you go for something at the upper end of the range.

I think the bendy lights are standard... Bendy lights are, but that’s old technology..... The dynamic light assist masks off part of the main beam, not quite the same as the headlights in the 535d which have a number of seperate LED units within the headlamp, it’s the same as the system in Johns 435d.

I see what is happening now. I'm looking at three door Rs and around half a dozen options are missing, including lane assist on the VW configurator. You also can't have keyless entry or electric seats on a three door. Looks to me like they're gonna do a Polo and drop the 3 door Golf soon. They'll make out that the 5 door is more popular, but that'll only be down to the fact that people will go for a five door so they can have the options they want!

I’d not looked at the 3 door, so had missed that, how strange.

As nice as the Hyundai is, I think I'd struggle to look past the Golf R in this class for the proven residuals etc. The biggest worry I would have with a Golf R is being burgled for the keys.

Hence my earlier comment. Trouble is, you can live in a nice quiet, low crime area, but the fuckers will follow you home from wherever you've been driving it that fateful day.

There are a few horror stories on PH about people with "decent" cars having their houses burgled for the car keys...... scary stuff

There has already been one incident at least, here, no more please. It could start a trend and become newsworthy.
