Who knows? I saw it clearly in an Autocar test a few years ago. I can't remember figures but lets say they tested a 280BHP X5 diesel to 60 in 7 seconds, the equivalently powerful Range Rover (which might've actually been a few kilos lighter) did it in 9. In addition while the X5 would top out at 150 the RR was at 130. The differences were significant, I can't imagine the ratios would've made all that much difference.

Range Rovers are never lighter than anything. Except Moons of Saturn.

I presume the figures were Autocar's own. The German equivalents aren't exactly light anyway, whether they are full of aluminium or not.
I'm sure I've noticed it among other size classes too.
