I've found a great alternative - grow a beard. Not a bushy one but once a week I go over it with the trimmer set on 4 (3 for the top lip area) and use the electric razor to do the lower chin/neck area that would be under a shirt collar. It's great and feels like it saves so much time every day. The only downside is the increasing amount of silver it highlights! I tried and I get dry, itchy skin and tried 2 different beard trimmers that would randomly just pluck hairs out, which was eye-wateringly painful. Plus I get a slightly ginger beard despite my (greying) brown hair.
My beard trimmer is a cheapo one and hasn't hurt me yet! Have you tried using some shaving-specific moisturiser after a shave, rather than aftershave?
I assume Chris' daily routine is something like:-
Get up, wash, shave go outside and clean the car Have tea, shave, go outside and wash the car Go outside and wash the car, shave, get ready for bed
Am I close Chris?

Very close ! There's no need to wash the car first thing in the morning when you've washed it last thing the previous night.....

I don't know, what about bird poo or particulates that come down overnight as it gets colder?

I moved to Cornerstone a while back and thoroughly recommend them. The blades are definitely better than the Gillette ones I used to use and I suffer far less from shaving rash.
The price is good, you can pick and choose what you want and how often on heir website, pause deliveries as and when you want and the customer service is great.
I've got a couple of £10 off 'vouchers' somewhere if anyone wants to try.

The Fiesta was almost spotless this morning, however I drove to Heathrow in the pouring rain and parked pre-booked under cover in the short-stay multi-storey. Am I the only person who has washed their car using the rainwater on it, after parking up I hope it is still clean when I come to drive home in a few days !

Yeah, who uses the short stay car park at Heathrow! Special offer, about £2 more than pod parking for 5 days (not £2 per day but £2 total extra) and the car is under cover the whole time, walking distance from the terminal. Almost same price as the 2 taxi journeys to take and collect me

Chris, serious question. Do you enjoy cleaning the car, or do you feel it's something that you have to do?
If the former, it may be OCPD (which is significantly different from OCD) and is also what most people mean when they refer to being 'a bit OCD'.

I just like having a clean car, I don't think it's OCD at all. Now that the children have left home etc, I have more time to spend on cleaning the car, so why not? After all, the car is the second most expensive purchase after the house, so why not look after it?

I mean this in the nicest way possible and that is all all well and good, but washing it in a public car park before departing on a trip is not something that I would consider normal behaviour.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obsessive%E2%80%93compulsive_personality_disorderThe second half of the second paragraph is enlightening as to the differences between OCD and OCPD, and a book I read on the former recently suggests that both OCD and OCPD are things that you can have a 'bit' of. I think you show signs of lower-level OCPD, and I don't say that as any form of criticism. But what you describe about cleaning then leaving the car is very strange, in that you have no control over it so why stress? Easy for me to say I know, as a clean car doesn't trouble/interest me anywhere near as much as it does you.

I wasn't being facetious when I said get help, Chris. Even we on this forum can see the washing compulsion is getting worse. No-one in their right frame of mind would pull into an airport carpark before going on holiday and then proceed to wash their car. I'd wager that if you hadn't washed it then it would have played on your mind the whole time you are away, niggling away in the back of your consciousness. I've seen a person with OCD often compulsively wash their hands, think there's nothing wrong with it and ask why anyone wouldn't want clean hands? There are usually other factors going on in their life that they feel they can't control so obsessively focus on one thing they can - like a clean car. They are unable to get a realistic perspective on their actions. Take note of Twelfth's posts, they will give you an insight into your behavior. Talking to someone will help.

If you like it and it's not harming anyone, keep at it. I wish I had the opportunity to wash my car 1/10th as much as Chris, but then I'd probably waste the time playing iPhone games....

A fresh, single bladed Bic every night with Gillette sensitive gel around my goatee and lips, followed by Gillette aftershave balm. Has to be nighttime, I can't face a razor in the morning. I end up having to trim my beard every so often as different bits grow at different speeds. And it's all different colours, although mostly grey.

We've seen your facial topiary, Mark. I'd have thought you'd need something from Black and Decker for that!

I have since foregone the full beard and gone back to a 90's style chin goatee. Every hipster and his wife has a beard now.

I think my goat dates back to the '90s.

Couldn't be bothered with a goatee, too much work as you still have to shave around it and style it. Unless you dye it a la Billy Connolly, in which case you have my deepest respect.

I'm glad we are back on topic now...... I remember seeing an older couple cleaning their Toyota Carina (complete with floral cushions on the back window) in the public car park at the south end of Loch Lomond one summer many years ago. They even did the door shuts!

I have a Philishave that I’ve had for years. It’s one of those wet or dry ones with a beard trimmer head included. I use it to trim my beard, which I’ve had for about 3 years now. I’ve a disposable blade that works for tidying up around the edges. Beard is getting more grey now but still has very little considering I’m in my mid 40’s.
By the way, whatever batteries they put in that Philishave, are brilliant. They hold a charge for months at a time.

I have a Panasonic foil shaver that I love for it's close shave, but which doesn't cause any skin irritation. Sadly, the batteries in it now last only a week or so at best, and the wee charge meter goes 100% - 80% - Flat!! I suspect a new one is on the cards soon.

Have got well and truly on board with using the brush again - it's like lubricating machinery in that it just makes it 'work'. Wet shavers - try it.
