Before pre-tensioners were fitted, it would have been a simple DIY job, but I guess that's no longer the case. Don't even think about it! The pretensions are connected to the the airbag triggers. When the boys were born I had to pay an arm and a leg to have the 530's front airbag disabled (before it was a button / key turn) Given that the pretensioners activate in a relatively minor collision, I'd have thought they wouldn't be too onerous to replace if the issue was big enough. That said, red belts wouldn't put me off the entire car, I'd live with it.

Servicing costs for my E90 M3 have been fairly reasonable. Condition-based servicing means that it's usually about every 18-24 months. The car is still on its original brakes all round after 8 years and 62k miles but will need some new ones all round in the next 6 months. I'm quite light on brakes unless I'm on track.
Servicing and consumables on the silver Cayman is more expensive, but again not by too much. Both cars still get looked after by the main dealers for servicing and most of the routine maintenance and their prices are often negotiable.

The C43 sounds fantastic; it’s surprisingly loud in an era of ever-quieter cars - especially as it’s not even a full-fat 63. But some details on most pre-owned ones aren’t to my liking. Specifically, the silver diffuser and silver edging on the front bumper look dreadful. The tail pipes also look awful.
I’ve changed my mind on a few things. I used to complain that BMW don’t visually differentiate the 340i/440i, compared to the S and 43 offerings from Audi and Merc respectively. However, I’m come to prefer the less obvious-look of something like a 340i. De-badge it and it’ll look like any other 320d. The fact that it comes with a manual is an added bonus, too.

Back to the original point, I saw a bin lorry yesterday and the 2 fatties in the front were clearly being restrained by red belts!

It's pretty standard on commercial vehicles, very easy to see that the belts are being worn.

Smart but pricey. I paid several grand less than that for my 440i GC.

I think I'd rather have a new 440iGC too at that money but an E43 might be a different kettle of fish!

I think I'd rather have a new 440iGC too at that money but an E43 might be a different kettle of fish! I like the exterior of the new E, but having been in a number of them lately on airport runs, I really, really don't like the dashboard instrument panel one bit. That vast blocky screen has bugger all to do with the rest of the dash design and just looks terrible to me. Given you spend your driving life staring at the dashboard, I think that would be a deal-breaker for me.
