EVO have a new test regime that includes weighing the car.
Not good news for the 3 Cherman supercoupes this month but by far the worst is the 'new, lightweight' Audi RS5. Claimed weight 1650kg, actual weight 1799kg! I know the Italians have always cheated a little by supplying dry weights but the Germans were never that bad.
If the RS5 really is 65kg (or whatever is claimed) lighter than its predecessor then that old one was a proper chubber!

On a separate note, I see that Autocar's test of the 4-pot diesel Velar suggests that their 9.3s 0-60 is 2.5s slower than JLR claims. If true, that must be the car world's biggest porky of late.

Really, are JLE claiming 0-60 in under 7s for a heavy 4x4? That must be unbelievable before anyone puts a stopwatch near it.

Near 70k and a 0-60 of over 9 seconds, oh dear JLR

Near 70k and a 0-60 of over 9 seconds, oh dear JLR Yes, but actually they're not marketing it as a sports vehicle are they so is it really that important. Have you ever seen any of the big SUVs really getting caned away from a standing start?
I would, however, be concerned what it implies about overtaking ability although thinking about it that's becoming a lost art in itself, even with decent power underfoot.

BMW 330E, 2l 4 pot hybrid in Autocar this week.
Claimed 1,660 kg. Actual 1,787 kg. Excess porkage 127 kgs. That's two lean blokes, or one mega-chubber.

I do wonder how much weight options add to a car. Upgraded sound systems must add a few kilos, larger wheels certainly do while things like panoramic sunroofs must be in tens of kilos.

I hadn't checked the list, but it includes such meaty items as metallic paint, advanced parking (whatever the fuck that is), interior comfort package (without which it'll be a monk's cell, no doubt), posh sat nav, 19" wheels and bigger brakes and surround camera. I hope that doesn't come to 127kgs, for BMW's sake.

Advanced parking is probably some wiring, sensors, a couple of control modules then something to do the steering - which is probably just the standard servo? 15kg tops? Wheels and brakes could be a fair bit sounds like a grown adult of weight is still unaccounted for.

I wonder what weight of batteries is in the e version then as its a heavy beast.

Huracan Performante:
Quoted 1,382. Actual 1,590.
That must be a record, in sheer porkage and as a percentage.
Still, given it broke Autocar's dry lap record and sounds like the end of the world, I'll forgive it.
The stst that really sticks with me is 30-60 through the gears. 1.4s. Jesus.

Hefty!
Did you see the weight figures for the hot hatches in the latest EVO? The Focus RS weighs about the same as the Huracan, although its actually close to Ford's figure anyway. It was about 200kg heavier than the SEAT Whateveritwas that they tested alongside.

I like to imagine a suited Italian PR guy shrugging it off as 'the weight of expectation'.

A new record in terms of porkage if not percentage:
Peugeot 5008 BlueHDi 150 GT Line (gotta love these names...)
Actual: 1703kg Quoted: 1490kg
Size of lie: Biblical at 213kg.
It has a glass sunroof as an optional extra, but that's still an insult to your buyers.

Fatty two Jags:
Four pot F Type is 1,640kg, 115 greater than claimed. No wonder the fast ones come in at nearly two tons.
E Pace with the same engine is claimed at 1,894, some 124 more than the larger F Pace because of steel construction. So we're talking over two tons in reality if JLR's scales are consistent.

Interesting piece in this month's evo about pork-related porkies.

New RR Phantom - pigged out at 2,780kgs, claimed 2,560. A new record for excess by kgs, if not percentage.
Not sure about effect of option spend, which came in at just under £109k...

But it still managed to hammer it's way to 100 mph in a smidge over 11 seconds..

11.8 is probably a smidge under 12 (rather than over 11), but it's not underpowered, is it?

But it still managed to hammer it's way to 100 mph in a smidge over 11 seconds.. The previous model Phantom which I drove was able to break the laws of physics, such was its ability to turn the scenery into a passing blur at the flex of my big toe.

I couldn't remember the time, I just knew it was 11 point something so I played fast and loose with the word " smidge "

Faster to 100 than they managed to get a Focus RS, as I believe they point out.

New 320d Sport auto. Claimed 1,455kg/as tested 1,639, so what's that - 184kgs?
Optional kit: tech pack (gesture control, better stereo, HUD), active cruise, speed limit assist, lane assist, parking assistant, and the premium package, whatever the fuck that might be. Tank is only 59l, and oil maybe 6l?
I'm guessing that dry weight must exclude doors or somesuch.

Last week the Dallara thing clocked an excess porkage that must be right up there in percentage terms, 987 vs a claimed 855.
This week, the Megane Trophy RS-R manages to weigh 1,280, against a claimed 1,306.

BMW 330D XDrive M Sport plus Touring.
Doubtless weighed down by its daft long name, quoted weight 1760kgs, actually 1922 kgs. No massively heavy optional gear I can see, so it seems that in terms of weight, BMW is the German flab denier to rival JLR. At least it doesn't seem to lie about performance.
Will haemorrhage thirty grand over three years without the option spend, almost forty with it. Eek.

Autocar is reprinting the odd road test to fill out pages whilst testing is restricted. I see that the Mondeo from 2007, in humble 2.0 TDCi form, was claimed at 1481kgs, but actually weighed 1635. The practice of lying is not new, then...

I'm still waiting for this week's mag to arrive in the post. Didn't come on Wednesday and Royal Mail have now stopped Saturday collections and deliveries.
FWIW Millbrook and Longcross are still open for vehicle testing........
