I think this video sums it up pretty well: It's a car built down to a price, designed by those with questionable taste and ultimately quite capable without being exceptional. Ouch. Chinese copy of a BMW with Renault Clio switchgear.

Price is an interesting thing. Auto Express did the maths and inflation adjusted the base E34 520 was more expensive than a base i5. In other aspects price is also interesting. Inflation adjustment of my first house puts it at around 33% of the price paid for our current house at the date of purchase. Not sure the current one feels three times better or more special. Feels like you are starting the mental journey to justifying the purchase of one...

Feels like you are starting the mental journey to justifying the purchase of one... Not quite but I like 5er estates so I have to consider it a high likelihood at some point. I’m still perfectly happy with Eva but mindful that it’s hassle free being not that old. I also don’t like the back end of this new 5er saloon at all so await spring 2024’s reveal with some trepidation. The two big exterior swings for buying the LCI G31 were the hockey stick front lights and the design treatment of the rear light over the launch G31. The G60 isn’t looking like the G61 will have the same effect.

8.35 to 12.00
Fairly comprehensive summary of the interior quality (in his opinion).

The Autogefuehl one side by side with the Merc was interesting. The door bin quality issue stood out as a real differentiator - piss poor to save pennies in the touchy-feely areas.

Talking of how the mighty have fallen , 2.46 in, the interior
Just what the actual fuck are they thinking ? It’s bad enough putting all the climate and terrain stuff in the screen, but doing so has made the dash look dreadful . The gearstick looks comically bad surrounded by nothing but cheap looking shitty plastic

I know it's the way everyone seems to be going, but it's a no from me. Damn things are near impossible to insure now anyway, so that won't help either.

Seems that Autocar are making quite a stand on all controls being on a screen. Matt Priors review of the new small electric Volvo was very damning.

But where are the Politicians when you need them? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realise that having to look at a screen and scroll through menus to change the heating or radio station is far less safe than being able to feel for a button and operate it without taking your eyes off the road. The Politicians need to legislate against it urgently. All they need to do is to state which controls must be controlled outwith the screen.

Making the cars unattractive at the same time as they are becoming uninsurable is a real recipe for disaster.

Maybe this is why active lane assist systems are legally required to be engaged on all new cars. With so much now on the screen it's no wonder cars are wandering about all over the road!

I have a client with a chauffeur business and he was telling me that he is going to replace his Range Rover because his renewal came in at over £4K. He is torn because it is the perfect vehicle but the big fall in values and the high insurance make it too expensive. He really doesn't know what he will replace it with but thought he might look at the S Class again, which is what he had before he started using Range Rovers.

Anyone I've spoken to who have driven cars with this, universally hate it! Deemed as far too intrusive, and in one case (car make unknown, sadly) was preventing the driver form turning right! Not helpful at best, positively dangerous if true.

The Politicians need to legislate against it urgently. All they need to do is to state which controls must be controlled outwith the screen. I totally agree. We have a number of technology partners who stop apps working on work phones in moving vehicles, they regularly cite recent data showing around half of all serious accidents are mobile phone distraction related (usually reading or sending messages). Watch people on our roads and I can well believe it. Meanwhile the genius OEM's are giving us a phone-like interface and making us read small text and press tiny buttons for all functions in a car. Its a bit of a headache changing cars but traditional buttons are much easier to see/find, and things like stalks and buttons you can mess with while watching the road even if you are learning that car. Touch screen for everything is inherently less safe, equiring more visual and mental attention, and while some OEM's have done it half competently others have tiny buttons and no obvious logic on putting the important stuff first... It does indeed need central guidance. Car UI designers are presumably young people sitting in an office, and I expect their marketing departments want it looking all iPad'y and emphasising the "halo" lastest features. Whereas a middle aged or old person with declining eyesight driving that car for the first time in rubbish visibility in the dark in heavy traffic, has another set of needs, and safety should win...

I think Frank Stephenson is dead right but unfortunately I don't think he is correct with his theories about the design language being deliberate - I just think they don't have a clue what they are doing whilst pandering to the Chinese and Asian likes and totally ignoring the European/American markets.
